Viva is an supermarket chain in the United Arab Emirates owned by Emirates-based multinational conglomerate Landmark Group. It launched on February 28, 2018 as the first food discounter in the country,[1] with the promise of saving an average family a month's salary on its annual shopping bills.[1]
Expansion[edit]
The Viva concept was inspired by the success of European discounters Lidl and Aldi.[2] The company claims over 80% of its 1,200 branded products meet European quality standards.[2] Originally launched with four outlets and plans for a further ten, the company as at 2023 had 77 outlets across the Emirates.[1] Launch outlets were located in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.[3]
With interests across multiple retail sectors, Landmark had previously had an agreement with Dutch multinational retailer Spar covering the Indian market, but had not previously entered its home grocery and supermarket retail segment.[4] Within 18 months of launch, by 2019 Viva had opened 16 outlets,[5] and by October 2021, despite the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, had expanded to 53 stores.[2]
