Vivian Health, formerly known as NurseFly, Inc., is a healthcare-exclusive jobs marketplace website based in San Francisco, California, with offices in Denver, Colorado. The website posts listings for nursing and allied health jobs offered through healthcare staffing agencies and healthcare systems from across the United States. Posted jobs include staff positions, travel contracts, local contracts, per diem/PRN jobs and locum tenens roles. As of February 28, 2023, 1 million clinicians were registered to use Vivian’s job marketplace platform.:[1] Vivian Health is owned by IAC, Inc. (NASDAQ: IAC), an American holding company that owns brands across 100 countries.

History[edit]

NurseFly was founded in late 2017 by Parth Bhakta and Eric Connor. The company created an online jobs marketplace for travel nurses (nurses willing to travel to take short-term positions at facilities with staffing shortages or seasonal needs).

The company isn’t a staffing agency but a jobs marketplace. It works directly with staffing agencies, charging them a subscription fee to access a pool of qualified candidates who have already submitted all necessary documentation. Staffing agency partners must include pay rates in their listings to promote NurseFly’s goal of salary transparency. Nurses use the site free of charge.

In August 2019, IAC, Inc. acquired NurseFly for a reported $15 million.[2] NurseFly co-founders Bhakta and Conner continued to lead NurseFly post-acquisition as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer, respectively.

NurseFly released its first of what would become an annual healthcare worker report in 2020.[3] While this initial report didn’t include a survey component, future reports would. The 2020 report went out to over 200,000 active nurses and allied health professionals utilizing the platform at that time. The 2020 Healthcare Staffing Study revealed the in-demand specialties, COVID-related job specialty growth by state and average pay by specialty in each state.

Between February 2020 and February 2021, NurseFly facilitated over 1 million job applications and had more than 300,000 healthcare professionals actively seeking work using its marketplace, translating to a 348% year-over-year increase in job seekers.[4]

Between May 2020 and May 2021, NurseFly grew to fill nearly 10% of all travel nursing positions across the United States.[5] During this time, the company heard from major health systems that filling permanent staff roles was often even more difficult than filling travel positions. This news led the company to spend three months rebuilding its platform to serve a broader range of healthcare professionals and employers.

In May 2021, NurseFly rebranded to Vivian Health and expanded its services[6] after building a proprietary data set of healthcare industry information using the 1.7 million jobs that had previously run through its systems.

Vivian released its second annual healthcare worker report, titled Future of Healthcare Workers 2021, on May 3, 2021.[7] It was the first to include a survey, with 1,273 nurses from all 50 states and all disciplines participating. The survey revealed that after a year of working on the frontlines battling COVID-19, 43% of respondents might consider leaving the healthcare profession, primarily due to hospital morale and staffing issues.

In April 2022, Vivian Health received a $60 million equity investment led by Thoma Bravo LP, an American private equity and growth capital firm. The funding round drew in other investors, including IAC and Collaborative Fund. The newly raised capital was earmarked to speed up the company’s growth and expansion, with some reserved for future M&A activities.[8][9]

Vivian released its third annual survey, titled State of the Healthcare Workforce 2022, on April 18, 2022.[10] Based on the responses from 3,545 healthcare workers from various disciplines, the survey revealed that despite seeing record wages, 63% of nurses were considering leaving their jobs due to deteriorating mental health, poor staff-to-patient ratios and lack of respect.[11]

In late April 2022, Vivian reported facilitating 15% of travel nursing placements, representing $1.5 billion in annualized labor spend. It further noted that more than 700,000 clinicians used its platform.[12]

In March 2023, Vivian Health had over 225 employer partners and more than one million healthcare professionals registered on its marketplace. At this point, it had facilitated more than 3 million job applications through its marketplace.[13]

Vivian released its fourth annual survey, titled The Future of Healthcare Work Report 2023[14] on March 9, 2023. The survey of 1,663 clinicians revealed that 86% of travel clinicians were open to taking a staff position for the right price but would seek employers offering more flexibility and work-life balance. Of those who responded, 65% were registered nurses, 36% worked in travel healthcare positions and 44% held staff positions.[15]

Vivian’s employees have the option to work fully remote. As of March 29, 2023, the company had 124 full-time employees working across 22 states. Adding in part-time roles, the company had 128 employees across 23 states. However, it currently has payroll set up in 29 states.

Rebranding[edit]

NurseFly was originally launched strictly for travel nurses. During its rebranding to Vivian Health, the digital job marketplace extended its reach to include job listings for permanent positions, per diem shifts and local openings[6]. The expansion also included adding all types of allied health jobs to its marketplace, employer reviews and a salary database to its website.

The company explained that the new name Vivian came from two Latin roots: “Viv,” meaning “life,” and “-ian,” meaning “worker.” Thus, Vivian means “life worker,” a nod to healthcare professionals who work to give life to others.[16]

Along with the new name and logo, Vivian Health, also referred to as Vivian, rolled out a new product experience.[5] Vivian.com went live on the web and via mobile applications on iOS and Android devices on May 4, 2021, with the following new tools and capabilities for clinicians to promote a smooth user experience[17]

  • Job Matching with new machine-learning technology that analyzes profiles and job information to match healthcare professionals to job opportunities better.
  • Pay Analysis Tools using Vivian’s proprietary pay database to allow healthcare workers to explore detailed salary information across positions and locations.
  • Employer Reviews to provide job seekers with more insights about potential employers, including unbiased details on employer responsiveness, work environments, benefits and many other aspects.
  • Resume Builder to help healthcare workers design and instantly download a professional resume generated from their Vivian Universal Profile.

Healthcare employers, including hospitals, health systems and staffing agencies, have access to features such as recruiter templates, real-time messaging and AI-based matching to help them cut down on time-consuming tasks common in the healthcare recruiting industry. By cutting down on recruiting time, employers can save time and money while finding relevant job candidates with the appropriate qualifications.

Acquisitions[edit]

In September 2022, Vivian Health announced an agreement with Lume,[18] a banking platform for healthcare workers, allowing Vivian to leverage Lume’s technology to create new banking and financial services for the registered clinicians on the Vivian platform.

As part of the agreement, Lume co-founders Christopher Chang and Shantanu Joshi joined Vivian Health to lead product and engineering efforts focused on developing new financial products and value-added services that directly benefit healthcare professionals.
