The Ward of the 21st Century (W21C) is a research institute located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.[1] It is based in the O'Brien Institute for Public Health at the University of Calgary (UCalgary) and Alberta Health Services (AHS).[2][3] Founded in 2004, W21C's mission is to define the future of health care.[4] W21C began with the opening of Unit 36, a medical teaching unit, in the Foothills Medical Centre. The W21C Research & Innovation Centre then opened in 2009.

Facilities[edit]

W21C is located in the Teaching, Research, and Wellness (TRW) Building at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine, which is annexed to the Foothills Medical Centre.

In 2011, the W21C space was visited by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as part of their royal tour of Canada.[5][6]

Unit 36[edit]

The Living Laboratory is located in the Foothills Medical Centre and is a medical teaching unit.[7] This space is used for clinical trials and research.

Human Factors & Simulation Lab[edit]

The Human Factors & Simulation Laboratory is located at W21C's main office in the TRW Building. It simulates a clinical setting so that the research team can analyze technologies and processes before they are applied to the health system.[7]

Innovation[edit]

W21C Innovation Academy[edit]

Every 2 years, W21C hosts an Innovation Academy in Calgary, AB to promote and nurture healthcare innovators in Western Canada.[8]

World Innovation Day[edit]

The World Innovation Day - Innovation for Health competition took place in Geneva, Switzerland on August 28-29, 2014.[9]

Global Healthcare Innovation Day[edit]

The first Global Healthcare Innovation Day (GHIA) took place in 2016 following the rebrand of the World Innovation Day.[10]

The 2016 GHIA event took place in Calgary at the Telus Spark on August 25-26.

2018[edit]

The 2018 GHIA event is taking place in Hong Kong, hosted by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
