Werner Griesel (born September 17, 1983) is a South African musician, designer, and ghostwriter, best known as the drummer for the folk-rock band Klopjag[1]. He is noted for his unique style and his eccentric ways of playing, designing and writing.

Biography[edit]

Werner grew up in Rayton, a small town close to Pretoria, Gauteng, and took up drums in the late 1990s. After playing for a local school band, Creating Charlie, he joined Klopjag in 2005 after they recorded their second album, 15de Laan. He is recognised for his drumming style, which emphasised tom-toms, cymbal crashes, and loud drum fills. He occasionally collaborated with other musicians, as drummer and as designer, appeared as an extra in films, but considered playing in Klopjag his primary occupation, and remains a member of the band. Werner moonlights as a ghostwriter for industry leaders and has also written articles[2][3] for Medium and the online version of Entrepreneur Media.

Music Career[edit]

Klopjag[edit]

Klopjag is a South-African Afrikaans music group who played their first ever show together on 13 February 2002. Their debut album 13/02 was nominated for a ‘Geraas’ Music Award in 2003 while they were playing major festivals like Aardklop and KKNK. The group has always been well received by music critics for their folk-rock lyrical storytelling themes. Their music videos are widespread featured on South African music channels like DSTV and MK89.

Influences[edit]

Werner told local magazines that his first ever drummer hero was Travis Barker, crediting him with inspiring him to pursue drumming full-time. He also mentioned John Bonham, Benny Greb, Dave Grohl, Stewart Copeland, Carter Beauford and Vinnie Colaiuta as some of his favourite drummers. In a 2013 Q&A with the magazine, Werner credited Keith Moon as his biggest influence and that he always loved his antics but his playing style was fluent.

Equipment[edit]

Werner currently plays Sonor, Meinl and Pacific Drums and Percussion, Drum Workshop and Sonor hardware and pedals, Zildjian cymbals and drumsticks, and Remo drumheads.
