Mark Laurence Richard Jr. (born February 28, 1991), known professionally as Witt Lowry, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. Lowry began his career as an independent artist in 2011, releasing five albums and one mixtape as of 2021.[3] Lowry releases music on YouTube, SoundCloud, and Spotify, among other streaming services. Lowry mainly distributes his music through the independent music aggregator TuneCore.[4] Lowry's music has been critically acclaimed for its emotionally-charged lyrics and high-energy vocal delivery.[5]

Early life and career[edit]

Mark Laurence Richard Jr. was born in the town of South Windsor, Connecticut, U.S., in February 28, 1991[4]. Initially, Richard held an interest in graphic design, aspiring to become a professional graphic designer. In the spring of 2011, however, he decided against it, instead opting for a career as a singer-songwriter.[6] Richard describes holding an interest in creative work and the writing process since an early age and so insists the transition was natural.

Richard chose Witty as his stage name at the start of his career, but later decided against it because he feared that Witty would not be search-friendly. As such, he shortened Witty to Witt and appended Lowry, which reportedly stems from Richard's middle name, Laurence.[7]

At the start of his career, Lowry published his music for free on websites such as YouTube, SoundCloud, and DatPiff. Later, Lowry began using TuneCore. He describes the choice to join TuneCore as one which enabled him to remain independent and in control of his music..[4] Today, Lowry distributes his music on YouTube, SoundCloud, DatPiff, and other music streaming services[3]

On January 27, 2012, Lowry published his first album Headphone Hero.[8][9].

Later, in 2013, he published the mixtape Kindest Regards for free on DatPiff to mixed critical reception.[10]

On September 25, 2015, Lowry published his second album Dreaming With Our Eyes Open.[11]

On September 18, 2017, Lowry published his third album I Could Not Plan This. [11]

On August 30, 2019, Lowry published his first studio CD album Nevers Road. The album is his fourth overall. [11]

Collaborations and associated acts[edit]

In 2013, Lowry collaborated with Kyla Benson on his first album Headphone Hero.[12] Later, in 2013, he collaborated with rapper Trippz Michaud on Kindest Regards.[13] For his second album Dreaming With Our Eyes Open, he again collaborated with Trippz Michaud as well as singer-songwriter Devvon Terrell.[14] Lowry's third album, I Could Not Plan This, had the largest list of featured artists yet, including Tori Solkowski, Max Schneider, GJan, Trippz Michaud, Deion Reverie, Ava Max and Dia Frampton.[15] Lowry's fourth studio album Nevers Road included collaborations with Dan Haynes, Deion Reverie, WHATEVER WE ARE, and Dia Frampton.
