Working Class Monsters is a 2022 novel by American author Michael Keith Bauch. It is his first published novel. The story involves a werewolf, a vampire, and a zombie navigating a world where supernatural creatures are part of day to day life and must suffer prejudice, bigotry, and economic hardships from both humans and other well established supernatural creatures. The action of the story takes place in fictional towns of San Judia and Los Oscoro, which reside in South Texas.
The novel is dedicated to his wife, Talitha.
Plot
Set in November and December of 2017, werewolf Aubrey is called into work the late shift for his delivery job at Pete's Pizza and More. There he meets nightshift mainstay Marissa, a vampire over 500 years old, who serves as the night manager. Putting issues between vampires and werewolves aside, they work together and eventually strike up a close friendship.
When the restaurant is attacked, owner Pete Darvill is the sole survivor and turned into a zombie. From there he is introduced to the way supernatural beings are really treated by the world, where they face outright hostility from the human population, and their plights are often ignored by local law enforcement. Aubrey, Marissa, and Pete reopen the restaurant, as not having a regular income means they will be exiled from the city, and hire on a mostly supernatural staff including Melody, a deep dweller with severe emotional issues, and Julia, a ghost that had been haunting the site since the 1980s.
Their attempts to find a normal rhythm in their lives are frustrated by the zombies that attacked, as they are tied to several other similar incidents across the area, drawing the attention of detectives Banner Nellis and Maria Sage. Maria must also deal with the continued advances of the vampire that created her, Malec, while Aubrey struggles with being the oldest son of the local werewolf pack leader.
Balancing relationships, finances, and trying to stay alive in the midst of the rising conflicts, the crew of Pete's Pizza and More must work together to either stop the violence and restore the uneasy peace or suffer the consequences of a full-scale war.
Background
Author Michael Bauch was first published on Vocal Media[1] in 2018 where he contributed several short stories and articles, most notably the short horror story Back Home[2]. Using this platform he began building the literary world that would become Working Class Monsters, which would allow him to address themes of hatred, bigotry, and socioeconomic inequality in the modern United States. A native of Portland, Texas[3], he grew up in the areas that would serve as his inspiration for the settings of the novel.
