World War II: TCG is a free-to-play online turn-based digital collectible card game developed and published by FrozenShard Games.[1]. The game is based on the events of World War II. It was first released on iOS on March 6, 2014, on Android on 19th June, 2014 and on Steam on February 23, 2019[2]. It's first creation of a team of 3 former Blizzard Entertainment employees[3][4][5], who decided to create the company on September 24, 2012[6]. The game is still being currently maintained and in constant development of new content and expansions by two developers: Christian Gascons and Marc Tormo[7]
The game was created after a successful kickstarter campaign where 18.000$ were gathered from fans across the world. The game was finalist in Gamelab 2014's "Best debut" section[8][9]. FrozenShard Games were also selected by Asus as the winner of the "Innovation Prize", where the developers of the game along with some representatives from Asus presented the game in Bilbao's Guggenheim museum[10]
The developers of the game are also know for releasing other titles for mobile and Steam such as Monster Battles, Heroes Empire, Magic Quest and Star Quest[11]
Game modes[edit]
There are 4 different game modes available:
PvE Campaign[edit]
It has a single player mode consists of 600 missions divided in three different difficulties. The player starts as a soldier and progresses through different battlefields distributed in 20 campaigns based on historical military events from World War II.
PvP[edit]
Along with Raids it's one of the most played game modes in the game. A one-on-one match between two players matched by an ELO matchmaking algorithm. This game mode is a cross-platform multiplayer online mode where players can fight against other players on the battlefield, no matter which platform they are in (Android, iOS or Steam).
Historical missions[edit]
The player is presented with a series of different historical battles that took place during the World War II (D-Day, Battle of Stalingrad, Battle of Iwo Jima, Battle of Gazala, etc...). Each one of these have up to 4 different difficulties (Easy, Medium, Hard and Defiance). Once a player selects a difficulty the system will allow the player to start the battle with a premade card deck and will have to survive during 4 matches. Each successful battle won will give rewards to the player, leaving the best for the last (and hardest) battle. There are 5 different historical missions that rotate on a weekly basis.
Raids[edit]
The most played game mode in the game. Players on the same Platoon (i.e. guild/brotherhood) -which accepts up to 15 members- will have a week to defeat a powerful enemy which will be represented by also some historical events on World War II (Operation Overlord, Pearl Harbor, Battle of Midway, Fall of Berlin, etc...). Successfully defeating these enemies will grant every player that participated in the raid powerful rewards, along with some blueprints, necessary to create powerful cards with the craft system of the game.
Gameplay[edit]
There are three major types of cards in World War II TCG – Units, Items and Orders. Every card is based on real historical World War II units and weapons (e.g.: Japanese A6M Zero plane, Fighting First Division, Tiger…)
The resource system is different from other card games, and can be similar to a wargame, most of the times the playter has 3 action points that can be use to play cards. This mechanic gives a wargame atmosphere and creates different layers of strategy where players have plenty of options from turn one.
One of the key mechanics of the game is the units promotion. Players can use their resources (action points) to promote units to be more powerful, e.g. the card starts as a simple soldier and will gain more stats and abilities while promoting, if that card is destroyed, it will not go to the card graveyard like in many other games, instead it will go directly back to the player's deck, giving it the chance to being drawn again in the following hands, already promoted.
