Yanbek[lower-alpha 1] was a 14th-century chieftain of Aukh, known for his leadership in the Insurgency in Aukh. He is mentioned in the Aukhar Teptar, a Chechen chronicle from the 16th century.[1][2][3][4]
Life[edit]
In the last quarter of the 14th century, Yanbek was elected the leader of Aukh and the commander of the Insurgency in Aukh. In the name of Jihad, Yanbek and his son Maida waged a quarter-century long war against the Mongol occupiers, managing to succeed after 5 main battles.[1][3][4][2]
During the first two battles, a battle on the Terek River and a battle in an unknown location, the Aukhar forces, led by Yanbek, successfully defeated the Mongols.[1][3][4]
During the third battle, the Aukhs were outnumbered. However, the tide of the battle turned with the arrival of a Gazikumukh army led by Shovkhal I, who allied with Aukh. Combined, the new allies managed to defeat the Mongol army, killing 3,000 Mongol soldiers in total.
Yanbek was also killed in the battle and was succeeded by his son Maida soon after, who continued the insurgency.[1][3][4]
Legacy[edit]
The mountains located in the Southern part of the Aukh District are called Yanbeka lamnash[lower-alpha 2], translating to "Mountains of Yanbek" in the Chechen language.[4][5]
