Youth interest in mathematics

Since the beginning of mathematics education, there have been several attempts to get young people interested in mathematics.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Youth interest in mathematics is very important, in 2008, former Tanzanian Prime Minister, Mizengo Pinda, urged the youth to develop keen interest in mathematics and science subjects to cope with current issues[7][8]. In Tanzania, mathematics is one of the core mandatory subjects to all students in education system.[9]

On many occasions, experience during math classes is what marks a person interest in mathematics.[10][11]

Attempts to arouse interest in mathematics have been carried out,[12][13] also mathematicians.[14]

1 in 3 young people say they are interested in mathematics.[15]

Math Olympiads[edit]

The Mathematical Olympiad has demonstrated the ability to bring together math students from all over the world, and arouse concerns among students.[16][17]

The Mathematical Olympiads teach to think mathematically, and not to memorize, and it is the student's creativity that provides the solution to the problem.[18]

Math education[edit]

There is a relation between academic success and interest in mathematics.[19]

In many countries, it is very normal to leave math at 16 to study other itineraries[20]. Studies show that leaving math at 16 has a negative effect on the development of the teen[21][22]. When students can leave math to pass to other subjects this decision is mainly made because of quiting math, giving reasons as math difficulty.[23]

Math games[edit]

Math games spark youth interest in math,[24][25][26] and makes them improve in the academic.[27] As a case study, in 2018 only 4 of more than 100 teachers claimed to have students who were interested in mathematics[28]. In 2021, after a long campaign to spread mathematics led by a high school student[29][30], the figure in a new survey increased tenfold.

In 2022, the Seville City Council organized a street math games initiative, attracting thousands of young people.[31]
