Yuriy Naiznanku (born November 8, Moscow) is a Russian dancer, teacher, musician, composer, and blogger. He is the founder of the Dancer's Growth project and a resident of the Center for New Media. He specializes in street dance styles (particularly Popping, Waving, and Animation) as well as social partner dances such as Kizomba, Tarraxo, and Hustle. He is also known as a composer and multi-instrumentalist performing original instrumental music.
Biography
Yuriy was born in Moscow into a family of scholars: his mother is a historian and music theorist, a graduate of Moscow State University and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory; his father was a theoretical physicist who spent his career at the MSU Department of Theoretical Physics. At the age of 14, he graduated school with honors through an accelerated external program while also studying piano at the music school affiliated with the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He later obtained a degree in musical theatre performance. In his youth, he was a competitive track and field athlete and later practiced powerlifting.
In addition to sports, science, and music, he was deeply involved in speed reading and mnemonic techniques, achieving high results and earning multiple certificates. Over the years, he studied in several universities, gaining both musical and academic foundations that shaped his systematic approach to learning.
He began his dance journey as an adult, starting with the partner dance Hustle. After two years of training—despite limited flexibility and coordination but with success in local dance competitions—he began exploring solo dance styles as a way to improve physical development. Within a year, he discovered Popping, a style that made a strong impression on him and eventually became central to his dance practice. Later, difficulties in finding a regular partner further motivated him to deepen his focus on street styles and personal physicality.
He trained in popping and other street styles through numerous masterclasses, group lessons, and private sessions with both Russian and international instructors. Influential figures in his development included Hoan, Popin’ John, Hozin, Boogie Frantick, Popin Pete, Mr. Wiggles, Dokyun, and other global street dance artists. In Russia, his long-term mentor was Ramon, with whom he studied Popping, Boogaloo, Waving, and Animation.
Alongside this, he expanded his skills in partner dances, learning West Coast Swing, Bachata, and later Kizomba and Tarraxo. In recent years, his focus has been on kizomba and tarraxo as styles that combine musicality, connection, and bodywork while offering fertile ground for blending solo and partner techniques. His teaching and research are centered on developing an integrated approach to movement, merging street and partner elements—particularly from popping—into improvisation, physical communication, and expressive visual presence.
Dancer's Growth Project
The "Dancer's Growth" project was founded in response to a lack of systematic dance education for adults. Yuriy noticed that most schools either focused on show-style results or choreography memorization, often neglecting body awareness, perception, and individual progress.
The project's core mission is to show that even complex dance techniques can be made accessible, clear, and beneficial to anyone—regardless of age or prior physical background. The teaching approach integrates musicality, plasticity, somatic intelligence, improvisational thinking, and benefits for mental and physical health.
Yuriy actively promotes popping as a versatile form not limited to battle or show formats. In his methodology, popping becomes a tool for body development, self-expression, and sensory refinement.
The project is known for its analytical and research-based perspective on dance: emphasizing movement structure, biomechanics, neurophysiology, musical perception, and somatic mindfulness. Dance is seen as a synergy of physical health, musical thinking, and expressiveness.
Yuriy creates original educational and dance content for platforms, performs solo and partner pieces, and continues to train, perform at festivals, and teach both in Moscow and online.
