2016 Greater Noida Rape Case
On 8 March, 2016, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped and set ablaze by her boyfriend or former boyfriend (18 or 19) in the Indian city of Greater Noida near New Delhi.[1] The victim survived long enough to give a statement to police form her hospital bed.[2]
The victim died of burns.[3]
It is one of a cluster of recent "horrific sexual crimes" that has led to renewed calls from Vrinda Grover and others to "respect a woman’s sexual autonomy," and reduce the number of sex crimes in India.[4][5]

At about 2.30am on 7 March, Ajay Sharma, the accused came to victim. They met on the roof, where he raped her and set her ablaze. He fled from the spot.The girl was admitted in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital ICU with more than 60% burns. The 18-year-old accused, who lives less than 500 metres from the girl’s residence, has since been arrested. She breathed her last at 4.30 am on 9 March, after battling an infection that eventually permeated into her blood stream, as is common in such serious burns. Sources said she also sustained blunt injuries on her head and leg.[6]

Policemen were deployed in Tigri village following the incident, fearing tension.[7]
