On 28 April 2020, one person was arrested on the charges of lynching two Hindu Sadhus in Pagona village in Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh, India. The Uttar Pradesh police are investigating the case and have said that there is no religion issue in the murder as both the murderer and the victims were Hindus.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] The UP Police said that they had to disclose the religion of the accused to avoid any religion related controversy in the incident. On 29 April, Sadhus from Mathura demanded that the murderer be hanged.[8]

Reactions[edit]

This incidence attracted outrage and the Uttar Pradesh government under BJP received criticism.[1][9][10]

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray called UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to take strict action against the killer.[1][11]

Opposition leaders including ex-Chief Minister of UP Akhilesh Yadav, politicians Priyanka Gandhi and Sanjay Raut demanded an inquiry into the incident and strict actions in the case without politicizing the incident.[12][6][13][14] On 29 April, Sadhus from Mathura demanded that the murderer be hanged.[15]
