The 2019 East–West Pipeline attack was a Houthi drone attack that targeted the Saudi East–West Crude Oil Pipeline on 14 May 2019. The attack temporarily shut down the pipeline before it was reopened. The Houthi Movement which is at war with Saudi Arabia has claimed responsibility for the attack.[1][2]
Attack[edit]
Afif and Dawadmi[edit]
On 14 May 2019 the pipeline came under attack by drones near the towns of Afif and Dawadmi. The attack resulted in a fire which was quickly contained, the pipeline was shut down briefly to prevent leakage. The pipeline resumed operations the next day according to Saudi news agency.[3][4]
Yanbu[edit]
Houthis also claimed to have struck Saudi oil facilities in the port city Yanbu on the same day using seven drones. Saudi Arabia later confirmed the strike in Yanbu and announced the suspension of the pipeline to undergo repairs. Saudi Arabia announced that no one was injured in the attacks.[5]
Aftermath[edit]
Oil prices rose over 1 percent following the attacks.[3]
