This is a timeline of the War in Donbass for May 2019. The timeline follows an ongoing conflict between Ukraine and anti-government pro-Russian separatists supported by Russian troops[1] in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.

1 May[edit]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 13 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[2][3] (including on 11 occasions in Donetsk region and on 2 occasions in Luhansk region[4]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[4] By noon of 1 May three ceasefire violations were registered, at Lebedynske (at around 01:00 am), at Hranitne (at around 00:05 am), and at Pisky (at around 10:25 am); no casualties were reported by the Ukrainian side.[4] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman (born in 1968) was killed and another was wounded in the Donbass region on the last day of April.[4] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 12 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in five locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[5] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded five Ukrainian violations of the truce within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military used small arms fire, heavy machine gun fire, automatic grenade launchers, anti-tank rockets and 120 mm mortars to harass pro-Russian troops at Zolote, Donetskyi, Lozove, Lohvynove and Zholobok.[6]

The press-centre of the Joint Forces Operation (JFO) reported in the evening that by 6:00 pm pro-Russian military had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 4 occasions, wounding two Ukrainian soldiers.[7] By the end of the day a total of 18 ceasefire violations were registered, with no further casualties on the Ukrainian side. In the eastern area of operations, which included the surroundings of Donetsk city and the region of Mariupol, Pisky was hit by the combined fire of 82 mm and 120 mm mortars; 82 mm mortar volleys also landed in Novomykhailivka, Krasnohorivka and Nikolaevka. Pro-Russian forces fired small arms, heavy machine guns and anti-tank rockets at Ukrainian positions at Avdiivka, Pyshchevik, Pavlopil, Shyrokyne and Verkhnyotoretske. Small arms fire was reported at Lebedynske and Hranitne. In the northern front, comprising the area around the city of Horlivka and the region of Luhansk, Yuzhne became the target of infantry weapons and 82 mm mortars. Small arms fired was recorded at Stanytsia Luhanska.[8][9] Pro-Russian authorities from Donetsk city recorded a series of Ukrainian violations of the truce by evening. Trudivske, Spartak, Dokuchaievsk and Volvo Center, in the environs of Donetsk city, and Ukrayinske, in the region of Mariupol, came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, heavy shelling was reported at Trudivske, Dokuchaievsk and Spartak, where pro-Russian positions were hit by 82 mm and 120 mm mortar barrages. BMP-1 armoured vehicles engaged pro-Russian forces at Dokuchaievsk.[10]

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 18 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[8] (including on 16 occasions in Donetsk region and twice in Luhansk region[11]); the fire was returned on almost all of the occasions.[11] By noon of 2 May six ceasefire violations were registered, with no casualties on the Ukrainian side.[11] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on the first day of May.[11] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded 11 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in five locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[12] Local sources reported that Ukrainian forces broke the truce seven times within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, automatic grenade launchers, anti-tank rocket launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, BMP-1 and BMP-2 armoured vehicles to engage pro-Russian forces at Zolote, Sentianivka, Kalynivka, Nyzhnie Lozove and Knyaz Igor memorial.[13]

According to the information provided by the press-centre of the JFO in the evening, from 00:01 am to 6:00 pm pro-Russian military had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 11 occasions — two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded as a result.[14] By the end of the day a total of 15 ceasefire violations were registered, one more Ukrainian serviceman was wounded. In the eastern front, Avdiivka was hit by the combined fire of 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. Novotroitske was meanwhile shelled by 82 mm mortars. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Hnutove. Lebedinske and Pavlopil were hit by anti-tank rockets, while shyrokyne and Pyshchevik received fire from automatic genade launchers. Ukrainian troops at Marinka were harassed with heavy machine gun fire. In the northern area of operations, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Novoluhanske supported by 82 mm mortar fire. Novozvanivka and Luhanske became the target of infantry weapons and automatic grenade launchers.[15][16] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded several Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire, all of them around Donetsk city. Ukrainian forces attacked Yasynuvata, Trudivske, Volvo Center, Mineralne and Dokuchaievsk. Dokuchaievsk, Trudivske and Yasynuvata were repeatedly shelled with 120 mm mortars. BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Avdiivka engaged pro-Russian positions at Mineralne and Yasynuvata.[17]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 15 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[15] (including on 12 occasions in Donetsk and on 3 occasions in Luhansk region[18]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[18] By noon of 3 May twelve ceasefire violations were registered, two Ukrainian soldiers were wounded as a result.[18] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 2 May.[18] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported nine Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in four locations using small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[19] The same sources said that the Ukrainian military opened fire 73 times on 16 settlements using banned weapons like 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. Pro-Russian positions were hit by 330 heavy-caliber rounds on the same period.[20] According to local officials, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire seven times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to engage pro-Russian positions at Zholobok, Kalynove, Sentianivka and Zolote.[21]

Ukrainian troops at Lebedynske, Nikolaevka and Pischevyk were harassed with small arms and heavy machine gun fire. In the northern front, Zolote became the target of automatic grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. Novoluhanske and Mayorsk were fired at from small arms and grenade launchers. Ukrainian forces at Mayorsk also came under heavy machine gun fire. Ukrainian positions at Shumy were hit by small arms fire and anti-tank rockets.[23][24] Ukrainian forces claimed the destruction of an enemy ammunition depot near Zaitseve and uploaded a video clip to Facebook.[25] Separatist authorities at Donetsk city recorded a series of Ukrainian violations of the truce during the day, all of them around Donetsk city. Dokuchaievsk, Vesele, Spartak, Mineralne and Zhabicheve came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, Dokuchaievsk and Spartak received 120 mm mortar fire from Ukrainian positions, while Vesele came under 82 mm mortar fire. BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Avdiivka launched an intense attack on Mineralne supported by 73 mm anti-tank recoilles rifles and 82 mm mortars. The village was also hit by three anti-tank guided missiles.[26]

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 21 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[23] (including 17 occasions in Donetsk and 4 occasions in Luhansk region[23]); Ukrainian forces returned fire with infantry weapons. By noon of 4 May, pro-Russian forces had committed three more violations of the truce.[23] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded seven Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in five locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[27] Local authorities reported that Ukrainian forces broke the truce seven times within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, automatic grenade launchers, anti-tank rocket launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles and 82 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian positions at Kalynove-Borshchevate, Lozove and Zolote.[28]

In the eastern area of operations, Marinka, Novomykhailivka, Kamianka, Novotroitske, Talakivka, Chermalyk and Pisky became the target of infantry weapons and grenade launchers. Avdiivka was shelled by 82 mm mortars. In the northern front, 120 mm mortar rounds hit Zaitseve, while 82 mm mortar volleys landed in Zaitseve. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles from Kalynove-Borshchevate engaged Ukrainian positions around Novooleksandrivka, supported by 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Zolote received fire from small arms and rocket launchers.[30] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded several Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire, all of them around Donetsk city. Ukrainian forces attacked Trudivske, Mineralne and Vasilyevka. In the main incidents, Trudivske came under 120 mm mortar fire, while Mineralne was shelled by Ukrainian forces using 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles and 82 mm mortars.[31]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 16 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[30] (including on 12 occasions in Donetsk region and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region[32]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[32] By noon of 5 May two ceasefire violations were registered, with no casualties on the Ukrainian side.[32] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass region on 4 May.[32] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported four Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in three locations using small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars.[33] In the territory of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, local officials reported seven Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military used small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Zolote, Kalynivka, Kalynove, Nyzhnie Lozove, Sentianivka and Zholobok.[34]

Pavlopil and Talakivka were hit by small arms fire, heavy machine gun fire and anti-tank rockets, while Lebedynske became the target of infantry weapons and automatic grenade launchers. Bohdanivka was fired at from small arms, heavy machine guns and different grenade launchers systems. Ukrainian forces at Pyshchevyk took fire meanwhile from small arms and automatic grenade launchers. In the northern area of operations, Novozvanivka was struck by 120 mm mortar volleys. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles attacked Novooleksandrivka supported by anti-tank grenade launchers. Two anti-tank guided missiles were launched at Krymske from Zholobok and Slavyanoserbsk.[37][38] A series of Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire was reported by pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city. Yasynuvata, Olenivka and Mineralne, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, Holmivsky, in the area of Horlivka and, in the region of Mariupol, Sakhanka, Pikuzy and Novoshyrokivske came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Avdiivka launched a substantial attack on pro-Russian positions at Mineralne, while Holmivsky was hit by 82 mm mortar rounds. One civilian was wounded by small arms fire at a checkpoint near Olenivka.[39]

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 11 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[8] (including on 7 occasions in Donetsk and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region[40]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[40] By noon of 6 May two ceasefire violations were registered.[40] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 5 May.[40] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported seven Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in seven locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[41] According to local officials, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire three times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. Yasynuvata and Mineralne, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, Gagarin mining complex, in the area of Horlivka and, in the region of Mariupol, Sakhanka, Pikuzy, Krasnyi Oktyabr and Ukrayinske came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, 120 mm mortar rounds landed at Krasnyi Oktyabr, while Mineralne came under 82 mm mortar fire. BMP-1 and BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Talakivka launched an attack on pro-Russian redoubts at Pikuzy supported by 82 mm mortars; BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Dzerzhinsky engaged pro-Russian forces at Gagarin. Sakhanka came under 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.[46]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 12 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[44] (including on 9 occasions in Donetsk region and on 3 occasions in Luhansk region[47]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[47] By noon of 7 May seven ceasefire violations were registered; one Ukrainian soldier was wounded.[47] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 6 May.[47] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported ten Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in seven locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, snipers, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[48] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported four Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in three locations using small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars.[32] In the territory of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, local officials reported seven Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military used heavy machine guns, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, BMP-1 fighting vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled artillery to engage pro-Russian positions at Kalynove.[49]

In the eastern front, Novotroitske came under 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Avdiivka received fire from 120 mm mortars, while 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Vodiane. Ukrainian troops at Bohdanivka, Starohnativka, Nikolaevka, Hnutove, Lebedynske and Nevelske became the target of infantry weapons and grenade launchers. In the northern theatre of operations, pro-Russian tanks from Kalynove exchanged fire with Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles at Novozvanivka. The tanks were supported by heavy machine guns, 120 mm mortars, 122 mm self-propelled artillery and anti-tank guided missiles. Another clash took place at Popasna, where Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles engaged pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles from Kalynove-Borshchevate that were firing on their positions. Pro-Russian forces also used automatic grenade launchers, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. The Ukrainian defenders also returned fire with 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Katerinivka came under the combined fire of 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. Vilnyi was hit by 82 mm mortar volleys, while Ukrainian troops were harassed with sniper fire at Yuzhne. Small arms fire was reported at Stanytsia Luhanska. The Ukrainian military claimed the destruction of two armoured fighting vehicles and an enemy bunker.[51][52] Pro-Russian sources from Donetsk city recorded several Ukrainian violations of the truce by evening; Mineralne, Vasilyevka, Spartak, Yasynuvata, Dokuchaievsk and Donetsk airport, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, Zaitseve, Dolomitne and Holmivsky, in the area of Horlivka, and Pikuzy, in the region of Mariupol, came under attack. In the main incidents, 120 mm mortar barrages landed in Pikuzy, Dokuchaievsk and Dolomitne. Spartak, Donetsk airport and Dokuchaievsk were also shelled by 82 mm mortars. BMP-1 armoured vehicles from Travneve engaged pro-Russian positions at Holmivsky, while BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Avdiivka and Zaitseve (south) opened fire at Mineralne and Zaitseve (north).[53]

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 25 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[8] (including on 14 occasions in Donetsk and on 11 occasions in Luhansk region[54][55]); the fire was returned on almost all of the occasions.[54] By noon of 8 May two ceasefire violations were registered; one Ukrainian soldier was lethally wounded at Pavlopil.[54] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and another three were wounded in the Donbass region on 7 May.[54][55] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded 16 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 11 locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, snipers, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[56] Officials from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded nine attacks by the Ukrainian military inside the republic's borders. Ukrainian forces used automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery to engage pro-Russian positions at Kalynove and Kalynove-Borshchevate.[57]

Bohdanivka was struck by heavy machine gun fire and anti-tank rockets. Starohnativka was fired at by 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Ukrainian troops at Lebedynske became the target of heavy machine gun and automatic grenade launchers. Pro-Russian troops fired small arms, heavy machine guns and anti-tank rocket launchers at Opytne. In the northern front, Novotoshkivke became the target of 82 mm mortars, while Ukrainian forces at Zalizne came under small arms and heavy machine gun fire.[59][60] A number of Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were recorded by pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city. Trudivske and Donetsk airport, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, Gagarin mining complex, Zaitseve and Mayorsk, in the area of Horlivka, and Novo Tavriya, in the region of Mariupol, came under attack. In the main incidents, Novo Tavriya and Zaitseve were shelled by 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Marinka attacked Trudivske supported by 82 mm mortars. Donetsk airport and Gagarin mining complex received fire from 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. A civilian resident was seriously injured by sniper fire at Trudivske.[61]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 11 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[59] (including on 9 occasions in Donetsk region and twice in Luhansk region[62]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[62] By noon of 9 May no ceasefire violations were registered.[62] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was killed and four were wounded in the Donbass region on 8 May.[62] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded 11 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in six locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[63] According to local officials, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire three times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, heavy machine guns, anti-tank rocket launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles and 82 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian positions at Smile, Kalynove, Holubovske and Donetskyi.[64]

Spartak, Oleksandrivka, Vasilyevka, Dokuchaievsk and Mineralne, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, Zaitseve and Verkhnyotoretske, in the area of Horlivka and, in the region of Mariupol, Petrovske and Novoshyrokivske, came under hostile fire. Ukrainian forces used automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, BMP-1 armoured vehicles, tanks, 122 mm and 152 mm self-propelled artillery to engage pro-Russian positions at Kalynove, Zolote, Zholobok, Sentianivka and Knyaz Igor memorial. According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 18 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[135] (including on 10 occasions in Donetsk and on 8 occasions in Luhansk region[137]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[137] By noon of 19 May two ceasefire violations were registered, with no casualties on the Ukrainian side.[137] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that four Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 18 May.[137] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded nine Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in nine locations using small arms, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 120 mm mortars, anti-aircraft guns, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[138] Local authorities reported that Ukrainian forces broke the truce four times within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's republic. The Ukrainian military carried out intense shelling on pro-Russian positions at Donetskyi and Zholobok using 82 mm and 120 mm mortars.[139]

In the eastern area of operations, Vodiane, Novohryhoriivka, Avdiivka, Lebedinske, Krasnohorivka, Marinka and Chermalyk received fire from infantry weapons and grenade launchers. Troitske became the target of ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft cannons and 100 mm T-12 anti-tank guns. In the northern front, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles from Ozeryanivka were met by Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles after opening fire on Ukrainian positions at Novhorodske; the Ukrainian stronghold was also hit by anti-tank rockets. Zolote was shelled by 82 mm mortars. Ukrainian forces returned fire using armoured fighting vehicles.[141][142] A series of Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire was reported by pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city. Yasynuvata and Spartak, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and, in the area of Horlivka, Dolomitne and Bayrak, came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, two anti-tank guided missiles launched from Avdiivka landed in Yasynuvata, while Spartak received fire from 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. Bayrak was shelled by 122 mm self-propelled artillery from Travneve and Dolomitne by 120 mm mortars fired from the same positions. BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Avdiivka engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Spartak.[143]

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 11 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[141] (including on 9 occasions in Donetsk region and twice in Luhansk region[144]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[144] By noon of 20 May three ceasefire violations were registered; one Ukrainian soldier was wounded.[144] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass region on 19 May.[144] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city recorded seven Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in five locations using small arms, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, anti-aircraft guns, anti-tank guided missiles, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled artillery.[145] According to local authorities, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire five times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed 73 mm anti-tank recoilless guns, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars to shell pro-Russian positions at Zolote, Sentianivka, Pryshyb and Smile.[146]

According to the information provided by the press-centre of the JFO in the evening, no further ceasefire violations, besides those three that were reported at noon, were registered by 6:00 pm.[147] By the end of the day total 10 ceasefire violations were registered, with no further casualties on the Ukrainian side. In the eastern front, Vodiane received fire from 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Ukrainian positions at Hnutove were hit by heavy machine gun fire and anti-tank rockets. Pro-Russian forces fired small arms and automatic grenade launchers at Starohnativka. Infantry weapons were fired at Krasnohorivka and Opytne. In the northern sector of operations, 82 mm mortar volleys landed in Novhorodske, Novotoshkivke and Zolote. These three settlements, along with Nikolaevka, also became the target of infantry weapons and grenade launchers.[148][149] A number of Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were recorded by pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city. Pro-Russian positions at Spartak, Vasilyevka and Zhabicheve, around Donetsk city, and Uzhivka, in the region of Mariupol, came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, Spartak was hit by 82 mm mortar rounds, while BMP-1 armoured vehicles from Pisky engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Zhabicheve supported by automatic grenade launchers.[150]

In his inaugural speech, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, said that his priority "is a ceasefire in the Donbass". He also assert that "Crimea and Donbass are Ukrainian land", and that the people living in those regions "are not strangers, they are ours, Ukrainians".[151]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 10 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day,[148] on 5 occasions both in Donetsk and in Luhansk region;[152] the fire was returned on several occasions.[152] By noon of 21 May two ceasefire violations were registered; one Ukrainian soldier was wounded as a result.[152][153] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass region on 20 May.[152][153] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded five Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in four locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[154] A single ceasefire violation was recorded by local officials within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, when Ukrainian forces from Krymske shelled Zholobok with 82 mm mortars.[155]

BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Pisky and Avdiivka engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Volvo-Center and Spartak. Sniper fire was reported at Zhabicheve.[175]

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 11 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[173] (including on 10 occasions in Donetsk region and once in Luhansk region[176]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[176] By noon of 24 May four ceasefire violations were registered; one Ukrainian soldier was wounded as a result.[176] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass region on 23 May.[176] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded 18 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in ten locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, snipers, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and anti-tank guided missiles.[177] No violations of the truce were reported by pro-Russian authorities in the territory of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic.[178]

According to the information provided by the press-centre of the JFO in the evening, from 00:01 am to 6:00 pm pro-Russian military had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 10 occasions — on 7 occasions in Donetsk and on 3 occasions in Luhansk region.[179] By the end of the day total 17 ceasefire violations were registered, one Ukrainian serviceman was killed, that brought the total number of Ukrainian casualties for this day to one soldier killed and another wounded. In the eastern front, two anti-tank guided missiles were launched at Krasnohorivka by pro-Russian forces from Staromykhailivka. Pisky, meanwhile, was hit by 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys. Hnutove, Lebedinske, Novotroitske, Pisky, Krasnohorivka, Avdiivka, Novoselivka, Kamianka and Verkhnyotoretske received fire from infantry weapons and different grenade-launcher systems. In the northern area of operations, Shumy became the target of heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars and 120 mm mortars. Zolote was shelled by 82 mm mortars. Small arms fire was reported at Stanytsia Luhanska.[180][181] Several Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were recorded by pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city. Trudivske, Dokuchaievsk, Mineralne, Spartak, Volvo Center and Vasilyevka, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, 6/7 mining complex, in the area of Horlivka, and, in the region of Mariupol, Sosnovske and Pikuzy, came under attack. In the main incidents, heavy shelling was reported at Sosnovske, which was hit by 100 rounds from 122 mm self-propelled artillery. In the meantime, 120 mm mortar volleys landed in Vasilyevka, Volvo Center, Trudivske and Spartak, while 6/7 mining complex and Dokuchaievsk were hit by 82 mm mortar fire. BMP-1 and BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Novotroitske engaged Ukrainian positions at Dokuchaievsk, which also came under attack by BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Berezove. Vasilyevka, Spartak, Mineralne and 6/7 mining complex received fire from 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.[182] Power lines were knocked down at Sosnovske and Naberezhne. Two civilian buildings in the area also received some damage.[183]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 17 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[180] (including on 13 occasions in Donetsk region and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region[184]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[184] By noon of 25 May no ceasefire violations were registered.[184] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman (born in 1986) was killed and another soldier was wounded in the Donbass region on 24 May.[184] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city recorded 20 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in ten locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, snipers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled artillery.[185] According to local authorities, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire two times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military used small arms and 82 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian positions at Lohvynove and Smile.[186]

Staromykhailivka, Vesele, Spartak, Mineralne and Zhabicheve came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, Staromykhailivka received 82 mm mortar fire from Ukrainian positions. BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Avdiivka and Pisky launched intense attacks on pro-Russian positions at Mineralne, Zhabicheve and Vesele, in the case of Zhabicheve supported by 73 mm anti-tank recoilles rifles and ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft guns.[189]

For the second consecutive day, no ceasefire violations were recorded in the northern area of operations.[195][196] A series of Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire was reported by pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city. Trudivske, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, and, in the region of Mariupol, Sakhanka and Dzezhinske, came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, BMP-1 armoured vehicles from Shyrokyne engaged pro-Russian positions at Sakhanka, supported by automatic grenade launchers, anti-tank rocket launchers and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Trudivske received fire from 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles and a 120 mm mortar.[197]

27 May[edit]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 3 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[195] — all that occurred in Donetsk region.[198] By noon of 27 May two ceasefire violations were registered, with no casualties on the Ukrainian side.[198] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 26 May.[198] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded six Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in three locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[199] Authorities from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic recorded one Ukrainian violation of the truce, when Ukrainian forces from Shchastya opened fire with 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles at Ukrainian positions near Vesela Hora.[200]

Mayorsk became the target of infantry weapons and anti-tank rocket launchers.[202][203] A series of Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire were recorded by pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city. Pro-Russian positions at Vasilyevka, Dokuchaievsk, Spartak, Trudivske, Volvo Center and Donetsk airport, around Donetsk city, Holmivsky and Gagarin mining complex, in the area of Horlivka, and, in the region of Mariupol, Uzhivka, Pikuzy and Dzerzhinske, came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, Holmivsky and Gagarin mining complex received 120 mm mortar fire. Uzhivka, Gagarin mining complex, Trudivske, Vasilyevka and Pikuzy were hit by 82 mm mortar volleys. BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Toretsk and Novotroitske engaged pro-Russian redoubts at Gagarin mining complex and Dokuchaievsk. Spartak became the target of ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft guns. In the northern front, Zhelezne was pounded by 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles and Popasna was hit by 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys.[209][210] Early in the morning, pro-Russian authorities reported the "massive shelling" of a number of neighborhoods and villages in the western area of Donetsk city. Seven houses were hit. Oleksandrivka, Spartak, Trudivske, Vasilyevka and Zhabicheve came under attack. In the area of Horlivka, Holmivsky received an intense barrage of 82 mm mortar fire. A drone attack was also carried out on Horlivka itself, where a civilian building was damaged and an elderly female civilian wounded. Oleksandrivka, Trudivske and Vasilyevka were hit by 120 mm mortar volleys, while Spartak, Zhabicheve and Vasilyevka where shelled from 82 mm mortars. Overall, Ukrainian forces fired more than 40 mortar rounds on the area. BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Avdiivka engaged pro-Russian positions at Spartak. Trudivske and Vasilyevka also received fire from 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.[211] A total of 18 residential buildings had been damaged by the morning of 29 May.[212]

29 May[edit]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 11 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[209] (including on 9 occasions in Donetsk and twice in Luhansk region[213]); the fire was returned on almost all of the occasions.[213] By noon of 29 May seven ceasefire violations were registered.[213] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass region on 28 May.[213] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded 14 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in six locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, anti-tank guided missiles, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[212] According to local authorities, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire two times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military used small arms, automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles to attack pro-Russian positions at Pervomaisk and Sentianivka.[214]

The press-centre of the JFO reported in the evening that by 6:00 pm pro-Russian military had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 8 occasions.[215] By the end of the day total 19 ceasefire violations were registered; no casualties were reported by the Ukrainian side. In the eastern area of operations, Vodiane was pounded by 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles launched attacks on Ukrainian positions at Avdiivka and Chermalyk, in the former case supported by ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft cannons. Two anti-tank guided missiles landed in Pisky, which also became the target of 82 mm mortars. The separatists also fired small arms, heavy machine guns and anti-tank rocket launchers at Hnutove, Marinka, Novotroitske, Talakivka, Novoselovka and Avdiivka. In the northern front, 152 mm artillery barrages struck Orekhove, while Zolote was fired at from 120 mm mortars. Novoluhanske was shelled with automatic grenade launchers. Small arms fire was reported at Stanytsia Luhanska.[216][217]

The spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters reported in the morning, that pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 19 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[216] (including on 15 occasions in Donetsk region and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region[218]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[218] By noon of 30 May no ceasefire violations were registered.[218] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 29 May.[218] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city recorded 11 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in six locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and anti-aircraft guns.[219] According to local officials, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire nine times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. Ukrainian forces shelled Sentianovka, Zholobok and Holubovske with 82 mm and 120 mm mortars.[220]

According to the information provided by the press-centre of the JFO in the evening, from 00:01 am to 6:00 pm pro-Russian military had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on one occasion — employing 82 mm mortars at Krymske and wounding one Ukrainian soldier as a result.[221] By the end of the day total 8 ceasefire violations were registered, another Ukrainian serviceman was wounded. In the eastern front, Avdiivka was shelled by 120 mm mortars, while Pisky was hit by heavy machine gun fire and 82 mm mortar volleys. Verkhnyotoretske and Avdiivka were struck meanwhile by small arms fire and anti-tank rockets. Opytne and Pishchevyk received fire from infantry weapons, anti-tank rocket launchers and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. In the northern area of operations, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled guns engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Novoluhanske supported by automatic grenade launchers and 120 mm mortars. Krymske came under 82 mm mortars.[222][223] A series of Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire was reported by pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city. Mineralne, Vasilyevka, Dokuchaievsk, Vesele, Spartak and Volvo Center, in the outskirts of Donetsk city, Holmivsky, Zaitseve and Ozeryanivka, in the area of Horlivka, and, in the region of Mariupol, Nova Tavrya and Dzezhinske, came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, 120 mm mortar rounds landed in Zaitseve and Nova Tavrya, while Dokuchaievsk, Ozeryanivka and Holmivsky received intense 82 mm mortar fire. Two anti-tank guided missiles launched from Ukrainian positions at Pisky landed in Vesele, where two civilians were wounded. BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Troitske engaged pro-Russian positions at Ozeryanivka, supported by 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles. Mineralne was fired at from ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft cannons. Ukrainian forces opened fire on Mineralne, Vesele, Vasilyevka and Holmivsky with 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.[224]

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 8 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day[222] (including on 6 occasions in Donetsk and on 2 occasions in Luhansk region[225]); the fire was returned on several occasions.[225] By noon of 31 May seven ceasefire violations were registered, with no casualties on the Ukrainian side.[225] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence confirmed at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 30 May.[225] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded 22 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 13 locations using small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, anti-aircraft guns, anti-tank guided missiles, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles.[226] The same sources said that the Ukrainian military opened fire 94 times on 23 settlements using banned weapons like 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, anti-tank guided missiles, armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. Ukrainian forces spent a total of 282 mortar rounds, 100 artillery rounds and eight anti-tank guided missiles.[227] Five pro-Russian soldiers were killed on the same period. One soldier and four civilians were wounded.[228] Local officials reported two Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military used automatic grenade launchers, anti-tank rocket launchers and 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles to attack pro-Russian positions at Kalynove and Kalynove-Borshchevate.[229]

In the northern front, Bayrak and Holmivsky received fire from heavy machine guns, 82 mm mortars and 122 self-propelled artillery.[231][232] Separatist authorities at Donetsk city recorded a series of Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire during the day. Staromykhailivka, Yasynuvata, Vasilyevka, Trudivske, Spartak and Dokuchaievsk, in the surroundings of Donetsk city, Gagarin and 6/7 mining complexes, in the area of Horlivka, and, in the region of Mariupol, Sosnovske and Novolaspa, came under hostile fire. In the main incidents, two anti-tank guided missiles launched from Avdiivka landed in Yasynuvata. Staromykhailivka and Trudivske were hit by 120 mm mortar rounds fired from Ukrainian positions, while Sosnovske and Trudivske received 82 mm mortar fire. BMP-2 armoured vehicles from Avdiivka launched an early morning attack on pro-Russian positions at Spartak. Trudivske, Vasilyevka, Dokuchaievsk and Spartak became the target of 73 mm anti-tank recoilless rifles.[233]
