Scotland Yard said, the shooting incident was not a terrorist attack. Nobody injured during the shooting and also no damage reported. The mosque was surrounded by armed police and they remained at the shooting location overnight.[4][1][2][3][5]
History[edit]
The Seven Kings mosque incident raised concerns over security at holy places. The incident happened after terrorist attack to holy places around the world such as recent attacks in New Zealand and Sri Lanka.[7][8] In Sri Lanka terrorist attack, April 2019, about 260 people killed in suicide bombing attack on churches.[7][8] A mass shooting incident, on March 2019, by a terrorist killed 50 people at Christchurch mosque, New Zealand.[7][8]
At a terrorist attack in north London, Darren Osborne drove a van at people near Finsbury Park mosque and killed and injured 10 people in June 2017.[1] Scotland Yard said, investigations showed that the handgun had been discharged and the shooting incident remembered an earlier terrorist incident in the London.[1]
Incident[edit]
A Mosque where located east London, had reported a masked gunman entered the mosque building when he was shooting during Ramadan prayers on 22:45, on 7 May 2019.[1][2][3][4][5] The Mosque name is Seven Kings Mosque, and located in Ilford district, east London, and Muslim from Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Indian and North African are using the mosque.[8] The masked gunman disappeared after incident and police believed tho shooting is relevant to an earlier incident in a street close to the mosque off High Road.[5] Police said. A shot was then heard at 10.45pm and we are looking for the suspect of firing a shot outside the mosque.[3] A witness said, the gunman had covered his face, entered the mosque on High Road, and finally left the mosque location before firing the gun, it's look like somebody was chasing him.[5][4] Because the shooting happened near a worship place, Scotland Yard duty officers, counter-terrorism command, were came to the incident location to see if violent extremism was involved or not.[3]
Police have considered is that the gunshot followed a gangs dispute that started in the nearby street and then moved into the mosque location.[3]But the Seven Kings Mosque incident comes two months after the Christchurch massacre and raised fears of a copycat attack in London.[5] Worshippers were inside the mosque for Ramadan evening prayers when the sound of a gunshot heard from outside the mosque.[5] Also, the Finsbury Park mosque attack, which killed and injured near 10 worshippers, had happened in north London in 2017.[3]
Several social media users stated that the an armed man entering the mosque when his face covered.[1][2][3][4][5] Metropolitan Police added: 'the gunman weapon was blank, no one injured, the incident don't sort as terrorist attack, officers is working with local sources for arresting the anonymous gunman, and if you have any information that think is useful, call 101 quoting ref: 8585/09May'.[4]
One mosque worshipper, Ibraheem Hussain, 19, who was inside the mosque when the gunman entered the mosque, described the incident: "We were in the mosque classrooms, upstairs, and suddenly hearing a loud sound. The shooting occurred about 30 minutes into the night prayer. At the first time we didn't recognize that the loud sound belong to gunshot, it's looked like for us as a something heavy fall. Then somebody said it was a gunshot sound and an anonymous had enter into the mosque. The managers saw the masked gunman, he acting weird.[2]
Worshipper Abdul Ahad wrote on Facebook: ‘A masked man entered the masjid during taraweeh prayers. We heard one bullet shot sound, Alhamdulillah no one injured, and the shooter ran away.’[4]
Finally, Scotland Yard investigations considered the gun shooting which conducted by anonymous masked shooter, as a non-terrorist attack. The police forces said, no one injured or no damage to the mosque building were reported. The detectives didn't sort the incident as terrorist attack or hate crime.[5] The gunman run away from the scene and it's alive, the mosque prayers have worried about the incident consequences.[8][7]
Reactions[edit]
The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said, he heard about the incident by the Met police commissioner, Cressida Dick, and listening to community leaders. It's good that hearing nobody was injured. The incident would have frightened worshippers during Ramadan, after the Christchurch attacks.[3]
Mr Hussain, an apprentice data analyst at one of the Big Four city firms, said the mosque incident concerned him over the safety of muslim during Ramadan. I'm thinking about Christchurch incident, it's crazy to think that incident would happen in London. Another worrying things is that the masked man was on foot, so he could attack again. We don't know what was the gunman goal, many Muslims live in that area and this could be dangerous for them.[8]
The mosque's imam, Mufti Suhail, said, "Outside the Seven Kings Mosque happened a shooting incident tonight during night prayers. The suspect ran away from the mosque location when stopped by guard resistance at the mosque. A shot was fired and no one injured, thank God."[8][7]
Ilford North MP Wes Streeting tweeted, "I will helping the police about the mosque incident. I know the reports about a masked gunman who entered Seven Kings Mosque during night. He left the scene and nobody have been hurt. Thank you to @MPSRedbridge for answering".[8][7]
Scotland Yard said, "the criminal investigation started by detectives from the East Area Command Unit, however the Trident gang squad had been notified. Reports says no one injured and no damage to the mosque building happened. Evidence shows that the gunman used a blank firing handgun. Officers will working closely with the local community and people who lives there to arrest suspect."[8][7]
