The Late A. Sivasailam (1934-2011) raised The Amalgamations Group, headquartered at Chennai, India, from a modest profile in the 1960’s to one of the country’s major industrial houses to reckon with today. A dreamer of ever-growing glory and prosperity for India, a doyen of industry and an inspiring leader with a global perspective under whose stewardship as Chairman, the Amalgamations Group grew into a significant contributor to the industrial and agricultural progress of India.
His thoughts on ‘excellence’ are well known and serve as a definition for the industry:
"Excellence is not just something that we engineer, inspect and input into our products. It is an innate desire to obtain the best that comes from within each one of us. It defines our lives at work and at home and ripples out into the world around us."
He started small – with a short stint at a Chartered Accountants Firm in London. When he returned to India, Sivasailam was entrusted with the task of giving shape to a new company that is globally recognized today as TAFE – Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited, the flagship company of the Amalgamations Group. There was no looking back since then. He grew in stature from TAFE’s General Manager in 1961 to Chairman and MD in subsequent years.
Gradually, he stepped forward towards becoming the Chairman of the Amalgamations Group in 1968. Under his wise governance, the Group grew exponentially and more than doubled its revenues.
TAFE was close to Sivasailam’s heart. It was here that he combined his well-honed business acumen with his genuine desire to make a change in the very fabric of the tea estate. It was during his time that the bold move to organic tea was made. Sivasailam was one of those rare individuals who was conferred the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by not one but many universities likewise the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, in recognition of his contributions to agricultural business management and industrial development.
A philanthropist at heart, A. Sivasailam was a munificent patron of various charitable endeavors. A Padma Shri awardee by the Government of India, for his contribution to Trade and Industry, Sivasailam had an abiding interest in supporting causes related to education and healthcare. He was responsible for the formation of Sri. Paramakalyani group of institutions in Alwarkurichi, Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.
