Abaasa Rwemereza Kiremire (born March 26, 1991), known professionally as Abaasa, is a Ugandan musician, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and music producer. He is also a sound engineer at Dustville records in Kampala. He self describes his style/theme of music composition as "liquid afro".[1][2]
Early life and education[edit]
Abaasa was born as Abaasa Rwemereza Kiremire on March 26, 1991 in Kampala, Uganda. His parents are Prof. Benard and Noreda Karemire, both lecturers at Makerere University. Abaasa attended City parents school for his primary education. he later joined Makerere college school and thereafter King's College Budo for his O-level and A-Level education.
In 2013, Abaasa attended SAE Institute of Technology Hollywood campus for a diploma in engineering and thereafter pursued a bachelor's degree in Audio production at SAE Institute, London campus.
In 2018, Abaasa graduated with a master's degree in music and entertainment business from Berklee College of Music.[1][3]
Music career[edit]
Abaasa started out by collaborating with artists like Sitenda on the song "Without You", Jc Muyonjo on "Kanonye" and on Pryce Teeba's "Nzikiriza". He released his first song, "Tuesday", in 2012. he was also among the pioneer members of Ugandan musician Lillian Mbabazi's band Lilian and the sundowners as a drummer in the band[4], which he officially left in 2017.
His debut mixtape Rukunguri, released in 2015, featured songs like "Runaway", "Find Myself", and "Ntegyerize" On the mixtape, he featured artists like Patrobas, The Mith, and kael.[2][5]
He followed up the mixtape with his debut studio album 1947, released in July 2017, which featured songs like "Ready to leave".[6]
In 2017 Abaasa was the recipient of the video of year award at the inaugural Uganda music Awards for the song "wantengula". In the same year, the video for his song "Voice Inside" featuring rapper Patrobas won six out of the seven nominations it had received at the Club music video awards gala held at Kampala Serena Hotel.[7] This video directed by Nicholas Tate won 'video of the year', 'collaboration of the year', 'best director', 'best inspirational song' categories. He also won the 'best newcomer' award for his song "Runaway" at the awards.[2][8]
