Adv.Vishnu Narhari Khodke.( Marathi: अॅड. विष्णु नरहरी खोडके) , Known as Khodke Wakil (खोडके वकिल) and Anna (अण्णा). He was an Attorney at Law from Mahad with contributions in political, law and social Fields.was President of Mahad Municipal Corporation from 1931 to 1947 in Kolaba district of Bombay province of British India (Today's Mahad in Raigad district, Maharashtra , India).

Early Life And Education[edit]

He was born on 2nd March 1900.his Father Narhari Khodke, was a merchant of dryfruits and spices in Mahad and Astrologer.

He completed primary education in Mahad, and secondary education in John Elphinstone high school, Alibaug.He completed graduation B.A.(honours) in Wilson College, Mumbai, in 1921.and Degree of L.L.B in Government Law school, Bombay (today's Mumbai) in 1924.[1]

He was mentioned in Bombay university calendar ( today's Mumbai university) later in 1926.[2]

when he got his LL.B degree, his father got attack of Mania, because of joy, and died.reason for attack was his son become Advocate.it was big thing in semi rural areas of Kulaba and in general Indian society, in period of British Raj.

Career[edit]

He started practice as an Attorney in Mahad Court and Kulaba District court, Alibaug in 1925, became a demanded Advocate in Mahad-Kulaba area.His point to point presentation of matter and style of speech in court was effective in front of Judges.He won suit against the Nawab of Janjira State, Mohammed Khan -2, in favour of a poor Farmer in 1930.it directed his Lawyer career further.

He contributed in social and political fields with Indian National Congress party.was appointed as President of Mahad Congress Committee in 1931.[1]

Under his leadership,Congress got majority in Municipal elections of Mahad in 1931 and Adv. Khodke was elected as a President of Mahad Municipal Corporation. He continued as president till 1947.[1]

He was born in Kshatriya Namdev Shimpi caste.was elected as a President of Namdev Shimpi Samaj Sanstha,Mahad.[1]

Adv.V.N.Khodke is known as Man of Basic Development of Mahad, he initiated basic developments like water facilities, electricity, roads, social utility structures and schemes for common people it helped for growth of Mahad towards developed town.

He contributed through responsibilities of Lawyer, President of Municipal corporation, President of Mahad congress committee, and President of Namdev Shimpi Samaj Sanstha,Mahad.

Because of his contributions in social, political and legal fields,British included his name in book "Who's Who in India Berma and Ceylon , in edition of 1941.[1] Who's Who is a series of books with biographical Briefs of people and their contributions.

Letter of Honour to Dr. Ambedkar[edit]

Being Advocate and President of Mahad Congress committee, he came in contact with Congress high command and other politicians, then was close with Mahatma Gandhi and Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar.[1] After Mahad Satyagraha, in 1927, Mahad became centre of movements of Dr. Ambedkar for equal rights for untouchables.Adv. Khodke supported him.

On 19th March 1940, as president of Mahad Municipal Corporation, Adv.Khodke arranged a function in Mahad to honour his friend Dr. B.R.Ambedkar gave him "A Letter of honour" (मानपत्र). Dr.Ambedkar, thanked Adv. Khodke for supporting him and his movements.[3]This Letter Of Honour from Adv. Khodke and Dr. Ambedkar's thanksgiving speech are included in book "Dr.Ambedkar's writings and speeches",Volume 18/ Part 2, published by Government of Maharashtra.[3]

He wrote two books in Marathi,1) Shikshan : Adhunik Bharatiyanchi Mulbhut Garaj and 2)Raigadas Bhet.[4][5]

He born in landlord and merchant family.his father Narahari Khodke was a merchant and astrologer.he predicted his time of his death, it came true with difference of 5 minutes.His ancestor Sadashiv Rao Khodke shifted from Paithan and settled in Mahad in 1570 AD.he started business of dry fruits and spices. Mahad was a port for foreign traders like Portuguese, British,Arabs,Turkey, they used to come in konkan for trading.Khodke family was in business with them till 1920,

He married to Sundarabai Khodke in 1935.had son Shashikumar and 2 daughters, Ratnaprabha Ambatkar, Sulochana Khandke. Shashikumar Khodke, a Manager in State Bank of India, and investor. he founded Ahvedantam Patsanstha (small scale cooperative bank).Shashikumar's wife, Mrs.Ratnaprabha Khodke, known as Baby Tai (बेबीताई ) was a social and political leader in Mahad.Shashikumar's son Abhay Kumar Khodke is a Actor,Singer and a owner of Shashikumar's Industries.daughter Mrs.Aparna Mankar owns Lydrova Group, packaged food and cosmetic Industries sector.her son Preet Mankar is singer and studying chartered accountancy.her Husband Mr.Prashnt Mankar owns infrastructure Company( Real Estate Developer).

Last Years and Memorials[edit]

After 1957,Adv. khodke stopped his law practice and political activities due to health problems.He died on 4 th March 1959.

A road in Mahad near chavdar tale, is named after him as Adv.V.N.Khodke Road.

In his memorial, a project of "Adv.V.N.Khodke college of Law" in Mahad is under process of permissions.his Grandsons Abhay Kumar and Mrs.Aparna initiated this project under their educational institution "Sau.Ratnaprabha Khodke University".
