Afrasiyab I (Arabic: افراسياب بن احمد الديري Afrasyab bin Ahmed Alderi) was Prince of Basra and the founder of the House of Afrasiyab which ruled Basra between 1596 to 1668.
Afrasiyab I ruled over Basra starting from 1596 until his death in 1603. He rose to power after taking over the office from the Ottoman Governor Ali Pasha who abdicated after a long period of unrest and rebellion by Basrans against the Ottoman rulers.[1]
Early life
Afrasiyab bin Ahmed was born in Basra in the 16th century, which was under Ottoman control. Some historical opinions mention that he was a descendant of the Seljuk Dynasty.
Legacy
After assuming the seat of power, he took the title of The Prince of Basra and started strengthening the security and commerce in the ancient port city. He established a local law force of 3000 men of Arabs, Kurds and Turks, and started gaining the loyalty and support from the heads of families and the local tribes.[2]
His wealth and knowledge of management helped him in keeping peace and maintaining the relationships with regional and international powers.
