Akio Haga (born 8 July 1966) is a Japanese car engineer and racing car designer.
Career[edit]
After graduating from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tokyo Gakugei University, Haga joined the Japanese motor sports company TOM'S. After working as an engineer and mechanic, he participated in the design of TOM'S 033F / 034F, which was the chassis for Formula 3 (F3) at that time, in 1993. After that, he moved to TOM'S GB, a British corporation of TOM'S, and continued to be involved in the development of racing cars in the United Kingdom.
After TOM'S GB was sold to Audi in 1998, he left TOM'S and moved to Jordan Grand Prix. At Jordan, after being involved in the design of the cooling system and exhaust system in Jordan 199, he gradually became involved in the design of the entire machine, and Jordan became Force India via Spyker F1 and MF1 Racing. In 2011, he became a project leader (design director). Haga was the first Japanese F1 constructor (outside Japan) to take up a position equivalent to a chief designer.[1]
At Force India, two teams of design teams take turns designing machines for one year, so Haga led the development of F1 cars of the same team starting with VJM01 as one of the leaders. He is also the design director of Racing Point (later renamed Aston Martin F1), which inherited the team from mid-2018.
