Al-Bashir Ben Salama (Arabic: البشير بن سلامة)[1], he was born in October 14, 1931. He is a Tunisian author and politician who held the Ministry of Cultural Affairs between 1981and 1986.[2]

His education[edit]

He studied at the Al-Saadiqia School, and then he joined Institute of Higher Studies, and then at the Higher Teachers' House in Tunisia, where he obtained a BA in Arabic language and literature degree. After he graduated, he taught at the Higher Institute and the Higher Teachers' House in Tunisia until 1963, so he evacuate himself to his political and cultural activities in the Constitutional Socialist Party and the interests of the state.[3]

His struggle[edit]

Al-Bashir Ben Salama has struggled in his working life since 1947 in the New Constitutional Free Party, and at the party’s conference in 1964 he was assigned the Youth Committee and the management of the Youth magazine. He was appointed between 1972 and 1973 as Secretary General of the Party Coordination Committee in Sousse and then attached to its central administration between 1973 and 1980, the date of his appointment as a member of the Political Bureau. He got acquainted with Muhammad Mzali since he was a student in Sadiqiyah and a long-standing friendship was consolidated, so he participated in editing the magazine Al-Fikr in 1955 and then worked with him at the Tunisian Radio and Television Corporation. Succeeding Fouad Mebazza. His tenure in the ministry witnessed the establishment of the House of Wisdom, the Tunisian National Theater and the Higher Institute for Cultural Revitalization. He continued to be at the head of the ministry until May 12, 1986. During the same period, other ministers close to Mazali were dismissed, such as Mazari Choucair, Fethiye Mazali and Hadi Bouricha, and soon Mazali himself was relieved of his duties in July 1986. Since then, Ben Salama has moved away from political life and devote himself to writing. He was elected as a member of the National Assembly in 1969, 1974 and 1979. He currently holds a seat in the Scientific Council of the House of Wisdom in the field of Arts.
