Alan Cutler

Alan Cutler is a British author and lecturer specialising in leadership, particularly within the hospitality industry. He served 16 years in the Royal Air Force [1] before retiring in 1989 as a Squadron Leader . His later career has included senior management roles. Cutler has written four books: the first two, published by Management Books, expounded his model, 'The Leadership Jigsaw'; the third, Aspire to Inspire, focused on inspirational leadership within the hospitality industry. His most recent book is, Leadership Psychology published by Kogan Page in 2014.


Professional achievements[edit]

Cutler is a Fellow of both the Chartered Management Institute and the Institute of Hospitality. He is a Senior Associate of Adair International and has run a training and consultancy company for 15 years. He lectures at Coventry University on the Masters in Business Psychology programme.[2]

Inspiration[edit]

Whilst taking an Open University course in psychology in 2013, Cutler had a ‘light bulb’ moment. He had been writing about leadership, and delivering leadership training, for many years, but had not previously considered the fundamental link between the two disciplines.

It occurred to him that if a definition of psychology is ‘understanding the mind and how it affects behaviour’ – that is exactly what leaders seek to do. To be inspirational, or even merely effective, they must understand what makes their people, as individuals and teams, tick: their hopes, aspirations, concerns, strengths, weaknesses and, hence, motivational stimuli.

Yet, whilst there are a multitude of books written about both leadership and psychology every year, Cutler found that there were very few that explored the connection between both. Hence, he wrote ‘Leadership Psychology – How the best leaders inspire their people,’ which is designed for both practicing middle and senior managers and students of either discipline.

The book offers new approaches to concepts such as emotional intelligence, leader development and the psychological contract, as well as original material offering business managers lessons from those who lead when life is threatened.
