Alex Cherney is an American musician and filmmaker.[1][2] He is best known for his sunshine indie music[3] and feature film Santamaria, which has a 7.9 on IMDb.[4]
Early life
Alex Cherney was born in Stony Brook, New York to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Stuart Cherney and anthropologist Madeline Cherney. He was raised there, where he spent much of his early life making short films and excelling in music. Cherney graduated from Ward Melville High School in 2010 and went on to attend McGill University in Montreal, Canada where he received his B.A. in Music.
Career
Film
On summer vacation from McGill in 2013, Cherney made his first full-length film The Grecophile, a no-budget comedy, with Reel Duty Movies: a production company he started with Greg Casino.[5] Through this experience Cherney fell in love with feature filmmaking, and after graduating from McGill went on to direct, co-write and produce 3 more films: Balls of Canada, Cats Kill, and Anybody Home.[2] Cherney parted ways with Reel Duty in 2017 and went on to form Riverspirit Studios.
With Riverspirit Studios, Cherney wrote, directed and produced Santamaria, a satire feature film that has a 7.9/10 rating on IMDb[4] and was distributed by Amazon Prime Video,[6] Pick Me Up!, an award-winning short film, and The Have Not, a slice-of-life feature drama that is being submitted to festivals in 2022.[2]
In addition to narrative film, Riverspirit Studios produces commercial videos and social ads for many established brands, including Audible, Netflix, Under Armour, Gopuff, and Ford Motor Company.[7]
Music
From 2007 to 2020 Cherney was a founding member of several rock/pop bands.[8] In 2020, Cherney shifted his efforts to a solo project entitled Rey, and released the album The Thing About Everywhere.[9][10][11] Cherney went on to release an EP (B's and Seeds) and several singles as Rey, gaining a lot of press, radio play, and playlist adds.[12] In 2021 Cherney decided to change his stage name from Rey to Alex Cherney. His sophomore album Cruise Control is available on vinyl[13] and releases digitally on June 10, 2022. It is a sunshine reggae album made with instrumental twin-brother duo The Brothers Nylon[14] and was recorded analog to tape in the dog days of summer 2021. Cherney cites his favorite artist Bob Marley as the key inspiration behind the album.[15]
