Early life and family[edit]

Habibur Rahman Saheb was born in 1934 to a Bengali family in the village of Rarai in Zakiganj, Sylhet. He was the third child of Mawlana Mumtaz Ali and Aminah Khatun. He had six brothers and one sister.

Education[edit]

He studied in the local primary school for some time and then enrolled at the Badarpur Senior Madrasah along with his elder brother Mawlana Najibur Rahman. After studying there for some days, he joined the Saraker Bazar Ahmadia Madrasa in Kanaighat where he completed his madhyamik. During his time in Saraker Bazar, he also completed the district primary examinations and got second place. After that, he enrolled at the Gachhbari Jameul Uloom Madrasah. He got eleventh place from the first division in the East Pakistan Madrasah Education Board Alim Examinations in 1955. He completed his Fazil from Gacchbari Madrasah, getting third place from the first division in 1957. He completed his Kamil from the same madrasah in 1959 and was eleventh place from the first division. He was the first student from Gacchbari Madrasa's history to have ever earned a place in the merit lists.

He was a khalifa of Shamsul Ulama Abdul Latif Chowdhury Saheb Qiblah Fultali in tasawwuf. He was also a student in ilm-e-hadith of Fultali saheb, Sayyid Muhammad bin Alawi al-Maliki of Saudi Arabia and Allamah Amimul Ehsan Barkati of Dhaka Alia Madrasa.

Career[edit]

On 3 August 1959, Habibur Rahman Saheb began his career as an assistant maulana at the Ichhamati Darul Uloom Senior Madrasah. On 10 April 1963, he became a teacher at the Ajiria Alia Madrasah in Fulbari, Gopalganj. By the instruction of his pir-o-murshid Hazrat Fultali Saheb Qiblah, he became the Pradhan Muhaddith of Satpur Darul Hadith Alia Madrasah from 23 November 1963. During the 1970 East Pakistan provinicial elections, Muhaddis Saheb was the Nizam-e-Islam Party candidate and gained many votes but was not successful.

He served as the Shaykhul Hadith of Satpur until 14 January 1974. The next day, he re-joined the Ichhamati Madrasa as the principal this time. Meanwhile, a serious problem arose with the principal of Satpur Madrasa. At the request of the district administration and local dignitaries to solve the problem, he became the principal of Satpur Madrasa from 11 October 1976. As a result of his solitary efforts, stability returned within a short time and he left Satpur on 2 April 1977.

After leaving Satpur, he travelled to the United Arab Emirates. He served as the imam and khatib of a mosque in the Emirate of UAQ. During his annual leave, he would voluntarily educate the Bedouins of the desert, particularly teaching the elderly Bedouins how to properly recite the Quran. Within a few days in the UAE, he joined a competitive examination and passed with flying colours, becoming an official judge in the UAE. He served as a judge in the UAQ court until 1981, which was when he travelled to the United Kingdom under the instruction of his pir-o-murshid Hazrat Fultali Saheb Qiblah. He spent fifteen days travelling across the country for waz mahfils. After that, both of them set off for Hajj, and after that, Habibur Rahman Saheb returned to the UAE.

On 14 September 1982, he returned to his role as the principal of Icchamati Madrasa. In January 1991, he founded the Monthly Shahjalal magazine which continued until 1993. He served as a long-time president of Bangladesh Anjumane Al Islah. He contested as an Anjumane Al Islah candidate backed by the Sammilita Sangram Parishad (Combined Struggle Council of Hafezzi Huzur) at the 1996 Bangladeshi general election for the Sylhet-5 (Zakiganj-Kanaighat) constituency and reached fourth place.

In 1995, he visited the USA after an invitation from his student. He finally retired as principal of Isamati Madrasa on 31 December 1999, but remained as the president of the Ichhamati Madrasa's governing board. In 2000, he purchased land and established the Hifzul Quran Madrasa next to the Latifia Furqania Madrasa in Thanabazar. The madrasa was later renamed to Thanabazar Habibia Hifzul Quran Madrasa and the orphanage was founded in 2011. Two academic buildings were built for the Thanabazar Dakhil Madrasa as well as a teachers auditorium, superintendent office, assistant office, student toilets and prayer room. The mosque was also made bigger and developed.

He visited Syria in October 2008. A dinner event was organised on 29 October and attended by the Syrian ulama. Dr. Asad Muhammad Saeed as-Sagharji took ijaza-sanad in ilm-e-hadith from Habibur Rahman Saheb. The event was attended by Dr. Azzaz al-Khatib, Shaykh Hisham al-Burhani, Shaykh Abdur-Rahman al-Hammami and others. Shaykh Hammami was also the driver for Muhaddis Saheb during his visit to Syria.

He would travel to the UK almost every year. In 2009, he spent nine whole months because of the high requests from his students there and spent that time teaching Shamail-e-Tirmidhi at the Darul Hadith Latifiah in London every Saturday. After the book was completed, he gave ijaza-sanad to 200 ulama who studied under him. He has also taught Riyadhus Saliheen and Al-Adab al-Mufrad in the UK as well.

In April 2010, Muhaddis Saheb visited Morocco. He did ziyarat to the mazars of Imam Jazuli (Dalail-e-Khayrat author), Qazi Ayaz (Qadi Iyad) and Imam as-Suhayli (RH). Muhaddis Saheb has also visited Assam for many mahfils too.
