Alpkit design, source, manufacture and sell high performance technical outdoor clothing and equipment to run, hike, climb, camp, swim and bike.[1] Their strapline is Go Nice Places Do Good Things.[2]
History[edit]
Based in the outskirts of Nottingham, the company was started by ‘four ordinary people trying to make something extraordinary’[1]. The four were Nick Smith, founder, together with Jim Evans, Col Stocker and Kenny Stocker who met in Cambridge while at school/college. It was Rab where they worked together developing further knowledge and skills before going on to launch Alpkit which came into existence in 2004.
Its first products - sleeping bags - launched the following year. They started off selling at festivals and online; customer engagement has been integral from day one. Observing the operation of Alpkit’s simple booths at outdoor events, the interaction with enthusiasts is clear as is their customers’ identification with the brand’s values. It is obvious that consumers trust the integrity and passion of the Alpkit team.
Recent History[edit]
Alpkit has grown rapidly under the leadership of its CEO David Hanney, who joined in 2014 and previously held senior roles at Go Outdoors and Planet X Bikes. In 2018 they received £1.7m funding to create 40 jobs.[3]. And in March 2020 they were one of the first UK outdoor brands to publish a comprehensive sustainability report.[4]
Alpkit Foundation[edit]
Alpkit formed Alpkit Foundation in 2015. Alpkit Foundation as charity number 1162585 with Charities Commission in the UK. Alpkit Foundation supports grassroots projects to help people get outside[5]. In October 2019 Alpkit Foundation announced that they had passed the milestone of making £200,000 of awards to over 600 projects.[6]
