Alton Villa are a fictional football team in the British comic Victor of D.C. Thomson and other strips in Football Picture Story Monthly (Kline and Powell, United, Goals of Jimmy Grant). Alton Villa appeared in the Goals of Jimmy Grant strip in the early 1990s. Alton Villa also appeared in the Playmaker strip of Hot Shot comic in 88/89. The club last appeared in 2000 in FPSM.

History

The club was located in the town of Alton. Kevin Kline signed for Alton Villa (from French side Rheines) to play in midfield for the 89/90 season under manager Malcolm Sanders, who was a former teammate to Kline. Alton Villa beat Brummington United in the FA Cup, in the 4th Round.[lower-alpha 1] The lineup under Malcolm Sanders: 4. Bobby Dobbs (MF), 6. Kevin Kline (MF), Paul McKay (c-MF), 9. Andy Fraser (FW), Paul Bellamy (FW).

The team with Kevin Kline in the squad won the English First Division in 1990 (FPSM) and beat Scottish champions Celdeen (Rod Powell was playing there) to win the unofficial Championship of Great Britain.

Alton Villa played in the First Division in the 90/91 and 91/92 seasons in the Goals of Jimmy Grant strip. During the first season, the flying Swedish Olaf Larssen was the team's topscorer and John Taylor was in 91/92. After knocking out Leicester City at neutral found Wayfield with 1-0 courtesy to John Taylor in the 90th minute, Villa qualified to the FA Cup final. In May 1992 they beat Stainford City in the FA Cup Final by 2-1 and won the trophy thanks to goals by John Taylor who had scored 23 league goals in the season.

Kevin Kline had returned in December 1991 for Villa in the FPSM (short tournament) while Tranford City knocked them out of the FA Cup in the same season (contradictory to Victor's timeline). In 1992 midfielder Peter Presse was transferred to Riverton United. In 92/93 Dave Bates was the league's second scorer, overtaken by Tranford City's Rod Powell at the end. In 1993 (United story) magic Villa (as described) beat United 3-0 (Alan Bennet scored) in the FA Cup semifinals and probably won the trophy. In 1994 (United story) in front of 45.000 spectators Villa beat Brockton Town by 2-1 thanks to a late winner by Bobby Clark and went to the FA Cup final again. Alton Villa is described as champion contenders for years (United story).

However, the season 93/94 the club found themselves in the Second Division alongside Stainford City. In 1996 Villa faced United at Wembley in another FA Cup final: they took the lead with Sherman but lost 2-1 (United story). In late 1996 they seemed be certain English champions knocking Jimmy Grant's Stainford City out of the FA Cup in quarterfinals and qualified to semifinals (Jimmy Grant story). In 1998 Alton Villa lost again to United in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

In 1999 the club won the title, with Blackford as runners up and Riverton United third. The same year they were third in the league of Jimmy Grant strip behind champions Denby City.

Rivalries

Villa were in First Division in 88/89 Rovers played against as Alton Town played Alton Rovers in the Second Division (the derby of the town). Alton Villa was also from the same town, and given that Rovers were promoted for the 89/90 season they must have met. Villa were definitely the most well known club from Alton compared to the other two sides.

Notable players

Gordon Coupar was a very good keeper for Villa (FPSM 143), Billy Burton a defender (95/96), Billy Smith a forward, and Peter Presse a midfielder who played for United too. Kelvin May (FPSM 109) was a winger and Harry Gregg the topscorer for the Alton Villa team that won the League and the unofficial Championship of Great Britain. Bobby Dobbs (FPSM 99) formed the best midfield in England First division with Kline and Paul McKay. Paul Bellamy (FPSM 99) scored a lot of goals for Alton Villa. Malcolm Sanders (FPSM 99) changed his position to central midfield after Kevin Kline's arrival.
