History
Alton Rovers were one of the original Football League clubs in 1888. A club with great tradition, won 3 league titles way back. In 1988 Rovers were aiming at returning to the top flight. During a tour in Australia in the summer of 1988 they played against United who featured Jimmy Grant. A recurring injury resulted into Joe Pearson's decision to offer him a pay pre game contract. Grant refused and surprisingly signed as player-manager (though relatively young) for Second Division side, Alton Rovers.
Rovers' coach was Bob Baker who acted as bench manager was Grant was on the pitch. Soon, Duncan Fraser signed for £1 million from United and Rovers became one of the favourites for promotion. Rovers beat First division title contenters Liverford in the League Cup final and later sealed promotion after many years. In the summer of 1989 the team toured USA playing against New York Statesmen and other American sides. Their last friendly on American soil was against Glasgow Royals who right after signed Jimmy Grant.
Alton Rovers played in the First Division in the 89/90 season.
