The Anarchist Communist Group (ACG) is a revolutionary class struggle organisation in Great Britain and Ireland, set up in February 2018 by former members of the Anarchist Federation in Great Britain.[1][2]

History[edit]

The ACG was founded as a response to what the founding members saw as a "lack of clarity and organisational malaise that rules in what passes for British anarchism",[3] basing themselves upon the principle that they are overtly and principally "class struggle anarchists or anarchist communists. We are a distinct tradition within the anarchist movement and have always been critical of other currents in the anarchist ‘movement’, including liberalism, individualism and anarchism as a life style choice. Our aim is to create an anarchist communist society. This can only be done by the mass of the working class (broadly defined as all those who have to sell their labour power) developing an effective revolutionary movement that overthrows class society, the State and all forms of authoritarianism and oppression, where people take control of society and their lives and can live co-operatively, without inequality and injustice and with freedom to be who they want without coercion. It is not just a question of overthrowing capitalism as an economic system but also the other oppressive structures and ideologies that are an integral part of the current system."[3]

In January 2019, the ACG along with the Communist Workers’ Organisation (CWO-ICT) organised a "No War but the Class War" event and is a co-signatory to the statement produced.[4]

In an interview with Die Platform in April 2019, the ACG reiterated its position as a Platformist organisation, stating "We feel the AF has lost its direction and has become more like a synthesis organisation that orientates towards the anarchist ‘scene’".[5]

The Group's articles have been translated and published by international publications such as Le Monde Libertaire[6] and KRAS,[7] as well as republished by Freedom.[8]

The journal, Anarchist Studies, noted that the ACG had been "reporting extensively on coronavirus-related strikes and walkouts at workplaces all over the world", and drew attention to the ACG highlighting the issue of domestic abuse during the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic lock-down.[9]

About the ACG today[edit]

"We do not see ourselves as the leaders of a revolutionary movement but part of a wider movement for revolutionary change. In addition, we strive to base all our current actions on the principles that will be the basis of the future society: mutual aid, solidarity, collective responsibility, individual freedom and autonomy, free association and federalism".[10]

The organisation has been critical of Extinction Rebellion[11] In January 2020, the ACG was included on the same counter-terrorism police list of "extremist ideologies" as Extinction Rebellion.[12]

The ACG has active groups in Glasgow, Kent, Leicester, London, Peterborough, Surrey and West Yorkshire, and activists throughout the UK.[13]
