Andrés Eduardo Burbano Valdés (born 1972) is a Colombian media artist, media technology scholar, author, and professor researching the interactions between science, art and technology. Burbano is currently Associate Professor in the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia.[2]

Early life and education[edit]

Burbano was born in Pasto, Colombia. He graduated from Lyceum of the University of Nariño in 1990, a secondary school in his native Pasto. He then moved to Bogotá where he graduated from National University of Colombia with a B.A. in Film and Television Production in 1996. In 2005 he obtained a M.A. in Interactive Media Creation at the Universitat Ramon Llull in Barcelona, Spain. Burbano graduated in 2013 from University of California, Santa Barbara where he obtained a Ph.D. in Media Arts and Technology under the supervision of George Legrady. The title of his doctoral dissertation was Inventions at the Borders of History Re-significance of Media Technologies From Latin America.[3]

Career[edit]

Burbano has presented in numerous academic and scientific conferences around the world. He has been a very active participant in the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) Conference where he has been invited to present in 2004, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2017, 2019, and 2022.[4][5][6]

Burbano is also a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). He has been involved with the SIGGRAPH conference series for many years under multiple roles:[7]

In January 31st, 2022 Burbano was announced as Chair of the 51st ACM SIGGRAPH Conference to take place in 2024.[8]

Burbano is considered “the definition of a professional with a true passion for the industry”. He has published more than twenty academic papers and his work has been cited in hundreds of publications.[9][10][11]
