Andrew Neil Maternick (commonly known as Andrew Neil), is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and poet. His work has been described as Indie folk and outsider music.[2][3][4]

Life[edit]

Andrew Neil Maternick was born August 9, 1988 in Colorado Springs to Constance Ann Maternick and Chester “Ray” Maternick, a retired U.S. Air Force USAF veteran.[5][1] His family later moved to the East Coast, where Andrew Neil attended the US Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS) at Fort Monmouth, NJ. He continued his education at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. In 2008, Andrew was diagnosed with Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and…he resigned from West Point[1]

On April 29, 2009, Andrew had a car accident and suffered a serious head injury and brain tissue damage. He began having psychotic episodes and spent extended periods of his life in psychiatric institutions. Andrew was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the Fall of 2009. Following the car accident, Andrew Neil experienced psychotic episodes and had to spend extended periods of his adult life in psychiatric institutions and has been diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder and complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).[5] In September 2009, Andrew Neil began his classes at Liberty University Lynchburg, Virginia. He had another psychotic episode in the dorms of the university and had to withdraw.[5]

In 2010, he developed an interest in music and began composing and playing songs.[6] In early 2010, Andrew began composing original songs while living as a recluse in his parent basement.[5][6]

In July 2013, he stabbed his younger brother in the arm during a psychotic episode. He spent 9 months in the Central Virginia Regional Jail before the Chief Judge Timothy K. Sanner found him not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI). After the verdict, he was committed to a State Hospital in Virginia.[5]

While a patient at Western State Hospital, he wrote and self-recorded nearly 70 songs in the confines of his room. Upon conditional release from the hospital, he and his father decided to select a number of those songs and produce an album called Code Purple - Andrew Neil.[7] He has gathered a small, but significant following by posting his music on various music sites such as ReverbNation and Soundcloud.

In June 2019, Andrew Neil was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma Cancer.[4] Since 2011, Andrew Neil has been living with his family in Gordonsville, Virginia.[5]

Music[edit]

Most of Andrew Neil's work consists of self recordings he records alone in his home and at Western State Hospital while he was a patient there from 2014 until 30 April 2017. Code Purple - Andrew Neil is the only Maternick's record album in which all the songs were written and recorded in a State Mental Hospital.[7]

Andrew Neil released his first studio album, Merry Go Round on 1 September 2018. The album was produced by songwriter and music producer Andy Waldeck, a founding member of the late 1990s Alternative Rock band Earth to Andy and who has collaborated in songwriting endeavors with Robert DeLeo and Chris Daughtry.[8] Notably Merry Go Round featured drummer Nathan Brown, a founding member of the 1990s Alternative Rock band Everything. The title track to "Merry Go Round" has been described as having "a seemingly math rock and shoegaze imbued aesthetic. His riffs are reminiscent of bands like Polvo and Slowdive."[9] The album reached No. 59[10] on the unweighted College Radio Charts and No. 134[11] on the weighted College Radio Charts. The album remained on the College Radio Charts from November 2018 through mid January 2019.
