Career[edit]

Roth began writing for the Michigan Advance in December 2018, covering the Michigan Legislature's lame-duck session. He continued writing for the States Newsroom member organization throughout 2019 and 2020, covering the 2020 United States presidential election, various congressional elections, state government, and more. His scoops at the Michigan Advance include reporting that plans were being made for a ranked-choice voting ballot initiative in Michigan and that the state had begun pilot testing an automatic contact tracing app intended to help fight the spread of COVID-19.[3][4]

In March 2021, Roth was awarded first place in the Michigan Press Association's news photograph contest and second place in the news photo story contest for his work at the Michigan Advance.[5]

Stories Roth wrote and photos he took for the Michigan Advance have been syndicated nationally in other States Newsroom organizations, including the Arizona Mirror[6][7], Colorado Newsline[8][9], Florida Phoenix[10], Georgia Recorder[11], Iowa Capital Dispatch[12][13], Maryland Matters[14][15], Nevada Current[16], Ohio Capital Journal[17], Pennsylvania Capital Star[18][19], Virginia Mercury[20][21], and Wisconsin Examiner[22][23]

In June 2020, Roth's first story in The Detroit News was published and appeared on the front page of the paper's print edition on June 12, 2020.[24] Roth interviewed two TikTok influencers, Alexa Wollney and Curtis Roach, for the story.

Roth is listed as a contributor to reports in Crain's Detroit Business, The Detroit Metro Times, Bloomberg News, The Verge, 9to5Mac, The Detroit News and more after they reported stories that Roth had exclusively reported first.[25][26][27][28][29][30]

Roth had previously reported for The State News, Michigan State University's student newspaper, and The Blazer, his high school newspaper.

While writing for The Blazer, Roth was one of the only high school journalists who received press credentials to cover the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland and 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.[31][32][33]
