Anila Dhami Chowdhry (born 25 February 1991), is a British television presenter, producer and journalist.

Early life and education[edit]

Anila Chowdhry was born in Essex.[1] She attended The Chafford School in Rainham, London. She became a finalist in the Young People of the Year awards for her services to the community.[2] She went on to study a bachelor's degree in English Literature at Queen Mary, University of London where she represented the faculty during the opening of a Humanities building by HRH Princess Anne. During her time at QMUL, Chowdhry did work experience at LBC during the 2012 London Riots and at the BBC in the Science development team.[3][4]

Career[edit]

Since 2009, she has been working as a broadcast journalist. After graduating, she freelanced as a NewsField producer for London Live, a digital producer for ITV News Central and broadcast journalist for the BBC Asian Network. She began by interviewing MPs in Parliament and traveling the country to cover topics affecting young people. From 2015 to 2016, she presented a topical entertainment television chat show, Zee Companion on Zee TV and went on to present the BBC Asian Network's Big Debate in 2016. She then worked as a producer for ITV News in the North East of the country, covering breaking stories like Grenfell, the Manchester and Westminster terror attacks and the General Election. In September 2017, Anila helped launch The Telegraph’s audio bulletins and went on to help re-launch Channel 5’s The Wright Stuff under ITN Productions and launched The Jeremy Vine Show.[5][6]

She has appeared on TIP TV online as a presenter, reporting and commentating on the news stories of the day. This secured her first presenting job in TV, hosting an hour-long factual entertainment phone-in show on Zee TV. Within six months, she was made the producer of the show, and also given a second show to host Jukebox Live on Zing TV.[7]

In 2016, Anila left Zee TV when she was nominated to stand as a candidate for the Women's Equality Party in the 2016 London Assembly election. She led a campaign, created policies, focused on three policy areas including the treatment of women in media, equal pay, and ending violence against women and girls, visited different charities and community initiatives.[8] and spoke on panels about women's rights.[9][10]

2016 – 2018[edit]

After the election in 2016, Anila went back into journalism. She became a presenter for WinkBall. In August 2016, she sat-in for Nihal Arthanayake on the BBC Asian Network,[11] hosting a three-hour news and current affairs phone-in debate show.[12]

From October 2016 to 2017, she moved to the North East to become a producer for ITV News, ITV Tyne Tees & Border. She was nominated for the ‘Regional Journalist of the Year’ award at the Asian Media Award for her breaking news coverage and for two three-part series she produced on loneliness and mental health.[13][14] Upon returning to London, she joined The Telegraph as a freelance broadcast journalist, where she helped launched an audio news service, selecting and writing daily bulletins and becoming one of the voices for the newspaper across audio platforms and devices like Amazon Alexa, podcast and Spotify.[15]

She appeared on Channel 4’s Britain Today Tonight to debate equal pay for women. In December 2017, she joined ITN Productions to re-launch Channel 5's The Wright Stuff. She wrote scripts, managed guests, Gallery produced, and edited video footage.[16]

2018 - present[edit]

Anila went back to freelancing in 2018, helping launch The Jeremy Vine Show. She specialised in managing the News reviews, the editorial agenda for the segment, and briefing guests. She edited videos, stills, on-air text and graphics and managed viewer phone calls, and led junior members of the production team working on the News Review and on-air content.

In 2019, Anila joined the BBC World Service as a freelance Broadcast Journalist. She works across various programs including Newshour, Update and OS, and also works for Radio 4's The World Tonight. She produces international news stories, and gives a voice to people and issues around the world.

After getting married to Reece Chowdhry, a Venture capitalist in January 2019, she launched a new website and changed her name from Dhami to Chowdhry in her re-launch.[17]

Personal life[edit]

Anila supports charities that focus on children, women and girls. She is UK Ambassador of period charity, Binti.,[18] working with women and girls in the United Kingdom, India and Africa and she is a supporter of the UK's biggest children's charity Barnardo's.[19] She led the CEO of Barnardo's, Javed Khan down a catwalk when she hosted an event for them.
