Anthony David Junior Elanga (born 27 April 2002) is a Swedish professional footballer who plays as a forward for Premier League club Manchester United and the Sweden under-17 team.
Club career
Manchester United
Early career
Elanga made his Under-18s Premier League North debut as a schoolboy, coming on as a substitute in the final match of the division at Liverpool. As a first-year scholar during the 2018–19 season, he scored four times in 22 appearances for Neil Ryan's Manchester United U18s team, including a Goal of the Month contender against Newcastle United in March.
In 2019–20, Elanga was the leading scorer for the under-18s, managing seven goals in nine league appearances before the season was curtailed prematurely by the COVID-19 pandemic. For his performances, he was given the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award, given each season to Manchester United's best academy player.[3]
A first glimpse of senior action arrived in the club's only pre-season friendly ahead of the 2020–21 season, at Aston Villa, when he came on as a second-half substitute at the 75th minute for Marcus Rashford.[4] Elanga scored six goals for the reserves in the first half of the 2020–21 season before suffering a collar bone injury after scoring twice in a 4–2 loss to Leicester City.
On 16 March 2021, he signed a new long-term contract with the club.[5] On 6 April 2021, after recovering from his injury, he was added to the club's B list for the UEFA Europa League, making him eligible to play in the first leg of their quarter-final against Granada.[6] He travelled to Spain with the squad the following day,[7] and was named on the bench as United won 2–0.[8]
International career
Elanga plays his international football for Sweden and has represented them at various under-age levels. In 2019, he played in the Under-17 European Championship and scored twice against France.[9]
Personal life
Elanga is the son of former Cameroon international Joseph Elanga.[10]
