Asif Kamal (born 10 October 1989) is an Indian art connoisseur and businessman based in New Delhi. He is the founder of Alturaash Group[1] and Asif Kamal Foundation.[2][3]

Career[edit]

In 2010 he founded Alturaash Group in Dubai and set up the first art gallery Alturaash Art in 2010. In 2019, the gallery opened a branch in New Delhi. Asif went on to establish Asif Kamal Foundation in 2019, which was an initiative to work in rural India in the areas of healthcare and school education.[4][5]

He started an art fund called Alturaash Art Fund, a Non-Banking Financial Corporation that provides loans against modern and contemporary Indian Art with an investment of 500 crores.[6]

Asif also launched a tech-driven art marketplace, called Artwally.com.[1]

In August 2020, Asif conducted a fundraiser exhibition in collaboration with Alturaash Art, Asif Kamal Foundation, and Art and Bid Auction House to raise and donate funds Rs 20 lakh to the CM Disaster Relief Fund for flood victims in Bihar.[7]

Controversy[edit]

2014[edit]

Asif was sent a legal notice by an auction house Bid & Hammer in June 2014 when he questioned the authenticity of the artwork advertised as being created by Ram Kumar in 1963 in the Bid & Hammer auction catalog.[8]

2015[edit]

In another incident in India, Asif claimed that two paintings worth Rs 15-20 crores by artist S. H. Raza and Jagdish Swaminathan were put up for bidding in one of the biggest auctions in India by British auction house Christie's to be fake.[9][10]

2016[edit]

He further alleged that the paintings curated by Manjit Bawa and auctioned at Mumbai-based Astaguru's online Modern Auction were fake. Dept sent a legal notice to the auctioneer following which one of the paintings was withdrawn.[11]

Philanthropy[edit]

Asif and his foundation started to providing support for the areas which are affected by natural disasters. He donated Rs. 20 lakh to the chief minister's disaster relief fund.[12][13]

During COVID-19 lockdown in India, Asif also helped migrant workers and their families to send them homes.[14][15][16]
