Audible Treats is a Brooklyn-based public relations and marketing agency. Founded in 2004 by Michelle McDevitt and Gavin Rhodes,[1][2] it offers print publicity, online marketing, and social media management and consulting to a range of clientele, including Grammy Award-winning artists, record labels, clothing brands, film companies, self-funded independent musicians, and radio stations.[3] Past clients include Nelly, Black Sheep, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Talib Kweli, and Mario. It hosts annual music industry showcases for CMJ and South by Southwest.[4]
Overview[edit]
Founding[edit]
Audible Treats was co-founded as a lifestyle and entertainment marketing firm by Gavin Rhodes and Michelle McDevitt. The pair met in New York University's Steinhardt Music Business graduate program. After graduating, they formed Audible Treats in 2004. Rhodes serves as Director of Marketing,[5] while McDevitt serves as President.[6] Current Online Marketing Manager, Dan Friedman, also attended the NYU MUBG program. The company is headquartered in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.[1][7]
In 2011, McDevitt was invited to be a Music Business Alumna-in-Residence for NYU's Music Business graduate program for the Spring semester Promotion & Publicity course.
Services[edit]
The agency is an entertainment and publicity firm,[6] chiefly offering customized print publicity, social media management and consulting, and online marketing. It helps clients obtain feature articles and music reviews, get tracks on sites and blogs, and utilize social networking, among other services.[1] Audible Treats works closely with multiple record labels and lifestyle companies.[3]
Since its inception, the agency has focused largely on musical artists and independent record labels, though it also provides publicity for video games, films, and other lifestyle clients.[3] Many of its musical clients are in the genres of rap and hip-hop, but in 2009 it began taking on clients in other styles such as rock and electronic.[1] A portion of its clients are signed to major labels and Grammy Award winners, while others are independently funded.[3][6] In 2010 it began taking on films and clothing brands.
Showcases[edit]
Audible Treats has organized a number of musical showcases. The first was the "Audible Treats CMJ 2009 Showcase", which included various artists represented by the agency such as rappers Souls of Mischief, Tanya Morgan, Trinity with Sadat X, Kam Moye, Oddisee, Finale, Jern Eye and TRUTHLiVE.[8] It took place at Southpaw in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn on October 22, 2009.[5][9][10]
It also held an Audible Treats Showcase for the March 2010 South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas.[7] Included were rap and hip-hop artists Black Sheep, Black Milk, Amp Live, Diamond District, Crown Royale, One Be Lo, Finale, League510, iLL-Literacy, TRUTHLiVE, and Bisco Smith.[4]
Its third showcase was again for the New York-based CMJ (College Music Journal) festivities, held in Greenwich Village on October 21, 2010.[3][11][12] The 2010 Audible Treats CMJ Showcase featured hip-hop artists Black Sheep, Rah Digga, Nottz, Asher Roth, Diamond District, Big Pooh + Hall of Justus, Chip Fu, Von Pea, Moe Green, DaVinci, and The Left.[5] The event was partially funded by local businesses.[12]
