Auxilium Parish Church, Kolkata in Kolkata, India, is a Roman Catholic, Latin Rite church. It is the largest parish in Kolkata and part of the Archdiocese of Kolkata[1]

History[edit]

The Salesians started Auxilium Parish in Tangra, on the outskirts of the Kolkata city in 1974 having relinquished the Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary Church on Portuguese Church street to Kolkata archdiocese in 1972. It was in the Cathedral parish that the Salesians started their first presence in Kolkata city in 1925 with the famous Catholic Orphan Press.

Today, Auxilium parish is the largest parish in Kolkata with several Mass centres including Motijheel Chapel, the very place where Mother Teresa of Calcutta started her street ministry, and a Chinese Chapel in Tangra.

The current Auxilium Parish Church was concieved in 1985 in the form of a plywood model. It was Fr Stroscio Rosario's dream to build a church in honour of Mary Help of Christians in the style of an Italian Cathedral. The project materialized over a period of 10 years and the church was established in 1995.
