After her graduation, Avery toured the world as the lead guitar player in a punk rock band, for a few years.[4] Since she always had aspirations towards business side of things, rather than performing, Avery moved to Los Angeles, where she began her career working as a marketing manager for both Capitol and Atlantic Records.[5]

Carl started her real estate career by buying her first rental property at the age of 26 on a $37,000 salary.[6] She strategically invested in short-term rental properties in great vacation retail markets, recognizing the potential that these investments had.[7] She decided to scale and build her portfolio, so over the next few years, Avery purchased short-term rental properties in the Smoky Mountains area. She became a millionaire five years later at the age of 31, owning a portfolio of 24 properties. Today, Avery owns 30 total properties, six of which are short-term rentals.[8]

Avery Carl is the CEO and the founder of The Short Term Shop; a real estate firm that specializes in mentoring investors in the process of buying and selling investment properties in the short-term (STR) and vacation rental markets in the U.S. They work with investor clients, with a focus on short-term rental properties.[9][10]
