Dr. Aya Soffer is an Israeli computer scientist at the IBM Haifa Research Lab. She is the vice president of AI technologies at IBM Research where she focuses on the use of natural language understanding and conversational systems and their applications in enterprises.[1]

Education

Soffer received her BSc from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem[2] before continuing to the department of computer science in the University of Maryland where she received her MS degree in 1992 and her PhD 1995.[3]

Career and research

After receiving her PhD she worked for the Goddard Space Flight Center as a research scientist working on NASA digital libraries for Earth science data.

She began working at IBM in 1999 and has worked in many fields of IBM AI's research.[4][5]

In her current role, she sets strategy for IBM scientists in all of IBM's research laboratories. She also collaborates with academic and industry organizations, particularly in Europe.[1][6]

Aya Soffer has delivered many keynote addresses,[7][8][9][10] podcasts[11] and blog posts on artificial intelligence, natural language understanding and computer vision including a TEDMED talk.[12]

Aya also serves on the board of directors for MindUp.[4]

Publications and awards

She has been often named as one of the most influential people in Israel. For example, she was named one of most influential women ("Power Women") by Forbes Israel in 2019,[13] in 2020 she was named of the 100 most influential people influencing life in Israel by TheMarker,[6] and in 2021 one of the 50 most influential women in Israel by Globes[14]
