Synopsis[edit]
The gravest threat dominating the intellectual discourse today is Terrorism. There might be a host of reasons for the spread of terror but the single most dominant factor is Islamic radicalisation. Nowadays almost all major terror strikes can be traced back to Islamic radicals, be it the 9/11 attacks, the 13 December 2001 attack on the Indian Parliament, the 2008 26/11 attacks in Mumbai or the recent terror incidents in France. The fallout of these attacks by Islamic fanatics is that that after every such incident muslim dominated areas and muslims in general are looked at with great suspicion. This unwanted tag can only be removed by the peace loving Muslims themselves. This is the biggest challenge facing the Muslim community today. The film Azamgarh not only outlines this challenge but also shows a way to overcome it.
2001 to 2008 was the time when the India was reeling under incessant terror attacks and most of them were traced back to Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh. Every such incident sullied the the reputation of Azamgarh further. The whole muslim population there were under a cloud of suspicion. This was creating great turmoil in the minds of peace loving muslims . This was the very concern with which was churning in the mind of Amir, a brilliant student living in Azamgarh.
He forsakes his studies to follow a difficult and dangerous path. What has Amir set out to achieve and does he succeed, will be intriguing to find out.
In times when terrorists like Hafiz Saeed are trying to radicalise the whole Muslim population of the world, what importance does this seemingly trivial effort of Amir hold? The film Azamgarh is an effort to delve deeper into this very question.
