BOYTOY is the debut studio EP from the American rock band BOYTOY.

Content

The seven-track EP was released on limited edition black 12"-vinyl with PaperCup Music, and cassette tape with Burger Records, as well as digital download, on 13 May 2014. It was recorded, produced, engineered, and mixed by Chris Ryan McLaughlin at 1867 Recording Studio in Boston, Massachusetts, and mastered by Jacob Blumberg at Mason Jar Music. The album draws comparison to Mikal Cronin's MCII.[1] On the songwriting, in an interview with Rookie, Saraa Untracht-Oakner explains they would send each other demos, sometimes beginning as phone recordings, or more developed recordings. Some of the songs were written independently, some from the drummer Matt, and others which grew out of jamming.[2]

The music video for "Shallow Town" premiered on Spin, on 10 June 2014, who compare it to the film Empire Records, and describe it as gross and menacing.[3][4] The music video for "Blazed" was released on 15 September 2014, and contains a mostly continuous take of the band leaving the backstage after a show, walking on the beach, getting in the backseat of a beach-buggy, and driving away.[5]

Pittsburgh City Paper says the EP features "sunny melodies, fuzzy guitars and smooth vocal delivery," noting that it is "garage rock stripped of its urgency, and BOYTOY seems completely fine with takin' it easy."[1]
