Putty is the second studio EP from the American rock band BOYTOY.
Content
The two-track psychedelic surf rock EP was released on 7"-vinyl and digital download with Little Dickman Records, on 13 January 2017.[1][2] It is produced by BOYTOY, and was recorded in the Summer of 2017 at Glenn Van Dyke's studio, Waverly Studios, in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, in Brooklyn, New York City, with mixing by Chris Ryan Mclaughlin at Transmitter Park Studio. Three songs were tracked.[3] Putty draws comparison to the music of the Monkees, Procol Harem, the Breeders, and Jane's Addiction, as well as 1960s surf rock.[4][5]
BOYTOY notes that the song "Burning in Orange" was written out of a desire to move away from "Ramones-style bangers and pop nuggets," and towards more experimental songwriting.[6]
Reception
Portland Mercury writes "Want" is a "cool cruiser where they sing about wanting stuff," and a review by The Aquarian Weekly describes the song as "staying out of the typical spectrum of modern pop and adding some ¾ syncopation to the addictive chorus. Guitars coil and circle the melody."[4][5] They add the song "Burning in Orange" "churns out tube-fueled blitzes of distorted fury, in the snarling vein of Kurt Cobain or early Nirvana six-string slinger Jason Everman."[4] The Columbia Daily Tribune says it is "perhaps the most interesting thing the band has recorded; a funky sort of breakdown with squalls of guitar and out-of-time fills," and Portland Mercury says it "sounds like it could soundtrack a slowmo basement dance party."[6][5]
