Night Leaf is the second studio album from the American rock band BOYTOY.
Content
The ten-track album was released on pink and splatter vinyl, and digital download with PaperCup Music and Stolen Body Records, compact disc with Stolen Body Records, and cassette tape with PaperCup Music and Burger Records, on 27 April 2018. It was recorded by Kyle Mullarky at The Pump House, in Topanga, California, and mastered by Paul Gold at Salt Mastering. The band recalls that for the Night Leaf sessions, they would surf in the morning, and then record at a Topanga Canyon ranch, "with animals all around."[1] The album is described as stoner rock, skate rock, and surfer rock, and it features laid back guitar solos, warm vocal harmonies, energized drumming, and New York punk inspired vocal stylings and lyrics.[2][3][4] Conceptually, Night Leaf is about love, loneliness, desire, and rage.[5] It is the first BOYTOY album with La Luz bassist, Lena Simon.[6] The album draws comparison to the music of the English band PINS, and the psychedelic garage rock band Night Beats.[7]
The record release party for the album was held at Secret Project Robot, in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City, on 27 April, with the bands Metallegg, and the Muckers.[1] The music video for the single "NY Rip-Off" features black and white line drawings of life in New York and is described as a "non-music video."[6][4]
Reception
The Daily Free Press writes that Night Leaf, "even at its most upbeat [is] still fairly laid-back [and] the guitar riffs are excellent, and the songs are catchy and fun." The review closes with saying the album is "a sharp record that begins with a mellow vibe and gives way to a grunge tone. It becomes apparent over the course of the record that BOYTOY could try a variety of different stylistic elements."[2] Bushwick Daily notes that Night Leaf "veers from fuzzy guitars and loud vocals towards clean, trebly solos and laid back melodies," adding the "group continues to display their knack for crafting catchy hooks, most evident on the album's first track "It's Alright," and the lovely wanderlusting feels of "Juarez.""[3] City Weekly writes that BOYTOY's music "creates a distinct aura. "Mary Anne" floats on a haze of ominous ennui [and] "Juarez" sounds piped in from a distant AM radio signal in the Texas desert."[6]
Clash says that "each song feels like a super-controlled blast of black-clad energy." They describe the song "Static Age" as "all barbed wire guitars and daubs of Vox organ lines, a superbly simple, stripped back rock 'n' roll cut."[7]
