Bart Defoort (born on February 10, 1964, Bruges, Belgium) is a Belgian composer and jazz musician who performs with his own orchestras and is a tenor saxophonist with the big band orchestra Brussels Jazz Orchestra. Defoort also plays soprano saxophone and clarinet.[1]
Biography
Bart Defoort comes from a musical family. His father is a classical musician, his brother Kris Defoort is a jazz composer and pianist. Bart studied at the Brussels Conservatory with Steve Houben and took master classes with John Ruocco, Joe Lovano and Dave Holland.[2]
Between 1982 and 1986, while studying at the Conservatory, he played in a number of musical theater pieces and avant-garde projects such as Bl!ndman Sax Quartet and Fred Van Hove WIM orchestra, meanwhile gaining a lot of experience by playing in numerous jam sessions.
Defoort has been very active in the jazz scene since 1985. He was leader of several "Quartets" and "Quintets", with which he played at major national festivals such as Jazz Middelheim and Jazz à Liège. He recorded four CDs as a leader, with mostly his own compositions.
As a sideman, he has played in Europe, in India (with Amit Heri and the Karnataka College of Percussion), Canada, USA and China. He has been a member of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra (BJO) since its inception in 1993. With this orchestra he tours internationally, makes recordings and plays the music of and with Bert Joris, Frank Vaganée, Maria Schneider, Toots Thielemans, Kenny Werner, Dave Liebman, Bob Mintzer, Tom Harrell, Bill Holman, Lee Konitz, Philip Catherine, Kenny Wheeler and others.[2]
