Benjamin Cottrill (born December 17, 1997) is a Canadian musician, singer, and songwriter from British Columbia.

Career[edit]

As a teenager, Cottrill was an avid Busker and participated in local music competitions.[1] After graduating High School, he self-released his debut EP Red Lines on September 20 2015.[2][3] Within the same week, it was announced that he had placed as a finalist in the 2015 RBC Emerging Artists Music Mentorship Program,[4] initiated by Canada's Walk of Fame and RBC.[5] The win included mentorship time with executives at Universal Music and financial support for his career.[6]

Cottrill was an active performer throughout 2017,[7][8] and in November of that year, he was nominated for a Fraser Valley Music Award under the Pop music category.[9] He also placed as a finalist in the Dakota Leslie Memorial Live Performance of the Year Award.[10][11]

Cottrill continued performing throughout 2018,[12] and on June 20 2018, he released his second EP Spice-Box[13] which has since gained over 75,000 streams on Spotify.[14][15] He embarked on the Spice-Box Tour soon thereafter, with dates across the Lower Mainland[16][17] and Southwestern Ontario.[18][19] Cottrill has discussed Spice-Box in interviews,[20] saying "the songs are maybe more mature [than Red Lines]... the songs are more reflective of an older person, I guess. Someone's who's grown up a little bit."[21]

Fraser Valley Music Awards[edit]

The Fraser Valley Music Awards (FVMAs) are awarded annually by the CIVL-FM judges panel to artists throughout the Fraser Valley in British Columbia who have shown excellence in their genre. Previous panel judges include Pat Steward and Shaun Verreault of Wide Mouth Mason.[22][11] Cottrill received one nomination.[9]

An extension of the FVMAs is the Dakota Leslie Memorial Live Performance of the Year Award, which aims to award artists for exceptional live performance.[23][11]
