Between Two Cinemas is a 2018 feature-length experimental, autobiographical documentary directed by Ross Lipman.

Synopsis[edit]

Between Two Cinemas is a unique autobiography that looks back at filmmaker/archivist Ross Lipman's winding path between international art cinema and the American avant-garde. Including restorations of his old films plus a new documentary/essay linking them, it uncovers previously unseen archival material on Stan Brakhage and Andrei Tarkovsky, and adds new collaborations with artists including visionary experimentalist Bruce Baillie, Jeanne Dielman cinematographer Babette Mangolte, Béla Tarr composer Mihály Víg and synthesizer pioneer Patrick Gleeson. Between Two Cinemas is an exploration of discord and resonance between two divergent cultures, and the worlds from which they emerge.

Critical reception[edit]

Between Two Cinemas enjoyed its world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 13, 2018.[1] The film went on to screen at various festivals around the world, including Hong Kong International Film Festival[2] and Jeonju International Film Festival.[3] In July 2019, the Moscow Experimental Film Festival featured a two-part program titled Between Two Cinemas: American Avant-Garde that centers on the film and its underlying ideology.[4]

The film premiered in the United States on December 4, 2018 as a special presentation by Acropolis Cinema in Los Angeles, California.[5]
