William (Bill) R. Wohlsifer[1] is an American attorney and member of the Libertarian Party who is currently running in the 2014 Florida Attorney General election.

Biography[edit]

Born in New Jersey, Wohlsifer moved between New Jersey and Florida twice before permanently relocating to Florida in 1985. Wohlsifer earned his B.A. in political science from the University of Central Florida in 1991, before going on to earn his J.D., cum laude, from St. Thomas University School of Law in 1996. He graduated in the top 10 percent of his class.

Professionally, Wohlsifer has practiced law since 1996. He currently practices debt collection, copyright and trademark litigation and homeowners' association law through the State of Florida and Washington D.C. [2] [3] [4] [5]

Stance on issues[edit]

Wohlsifer supports the legalization of medical marijuana in Florida, and therefore supports Amendment 2 on the ballot. He has written past legislation on this subject.[6] [7] [8] [9]

He also supports the legalization of same-sex marriage in Florida, holding that upon election he would "use the holding in Windsor to advocate in court for a finding that ensures that every Florida citizen receives the full protection of our State and Federal Constitutions, by showing that the state’s denial to committed same-sex couples of financial, tax, adoption, property ownership, credit, and other rights to their married heterosexual counterparts bears no substantial relationship to a legitimate governmental purpose. Such unequal dispensation of rights and benefits to committed same-sex couples can no longer be tolerated under our State Constitution." [10] [11]

Wohlsifer advocates for the creation of an industrial hemp cultivation program in the state. To do so, Wohlsifer claims, would generate tax revenue, revitalize vacant farmlands, add to the sale of farm machinery and agribusiness supplies, and create jobs.[12] [13] [14]

He supports the freedom of Floridians to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights, aiming to work within the courts to uphold and to harmonize the law toward allowing open carry under substantially similar regulations that currently apply to concealed carry under statute.[15] [16] [17]

Other topics of support include advancing consumer protection policy, fighting against fraudulent and deceptive trade practices, preserving the constitutional right to access to public records and access to open government, investigating allegations of corruption in state government, protecting parental rights, supporting diversity in educational strategies and methodologies, and protecting Floridians from overreaching federal encroachment.[18] [19] [20]

Personal life[edit]

Wohlsifer is currently married and has two children.[21]
