BookMyShow is an Indian movie and events ticket-booking platform created in 2007. It is a subsidiary of Big Tree entertainment company.[5]

History[edit]

Book My Show was founded by Parikshit Dar and Rajesh Balpande in 2007.[6][7] The app's parent company has investors such as Network 18, Accel Partners, and SAIF Partners.[8] Mukesh Ambani currently owns 39% the company's stakes through Reliance Industries.

In the 2014-15 fiscal year the website sold 5 Crore (50 million) tickets.

In financial year 2018, Book My Show lost 140.25 crore (US$20 million) while claiming on their website to have sold 15 million tickets to 30 million people per month.[9] During the COVID-19 pandemic, BookMyShow lost a significant amount of business;[10] however, in April 2022, BookMyShow sold a record 29 million tickets due to the post-pandemic boom in cinema-going.[11]

BookMyShow expanded some of its services to a few Arab countries in 2021.[12]

In 2022, Book My Show signed an exclusive ticket-selling deal with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) which allowed them to sell tickets to the 2022 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).[13][14]

BookMyShow also offers TVoD (transaction video-on-demand) streaming services in the form of BookMyShow Stream, which was launched in 2021.[15][16] BookMyShow Stream has partnered with companies such as MUBI, ITV Studios, and the BBC to offer some international content.[17][18][19]

Partnership[edit]

In 2013, Book My Show signed a five year deal with PVR Cinema which allowed them to start selling tickets to PVR's multiplexes across India.[20]

Controversies[edit]

In May 2019, Book My Show's a manager in Kolkata alleged that some customers used debit and credit cards inappropriately to purchase tickets to IPL matches. In response, police arrested Sujit Ojha for unlawful activities. Reportedly he purchased 68 tickets of ₹ 2,35,027. Cyber police arrested bookies, and a magistrate denied bail to Ojha.[21]

In 2019 Vijay Gopal, president of Forum Against Corruption, filed a Right to information query to the Reserve Bank of India for information about internet fees that ticket-selling portals take from their customers while accepting payments from debit and credit cards. RBI found that the portals were violating the Merchant Discount Rate regulations by charging their customers extra fees.[22]

In 2022, Gopal, founder and owner of ticket selling portal Showtyme, filed a case against Book My Show, for violating 'GO 47. He claimed to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) that Book My Show had formed an explicit cartel with multiplexes owners, and does not allow selling tickets to other portals even under 50% less convenience fees, "thereby controlling the movie ticketing industry and [imposing] barriers for new entrants". CCI directed Director General of Police (DIG), Telangana to investigate the allegations for violating 'GO 47 and the Competition Act, which mandate keeping 50% tickets to sell at licensed booking offices of cinema theatres.[23]
