Early life and career

Schaeffer began his career in trading in 1989 after being introduced to the trading floors by his brother.[2] He worked on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange as a clerk and then eurodollar options trader, and later traded crude oil product options on the New York Mercantile Exchange. He also traded equity options on the American Stock Exchange. Following the decline of open outcry trading, he transitioned to first brokering energy derivatives over-the-counter then managing his own investment portfolio.[3][4]

Schaeffer has written over 400 columns on a variety of topics from history, to politics, business, science, and culture for publications including The Wall Street Journal, National Review, New York Daily News, The Hill, The Federalist, Daily Wire, The Blaze, Breitbart, and ZeroHedge.[6][7][8] He has also appeared on CNBC and Fox Business.

His first novel, Of Another Time and Place (2018), is a historical fiction set during World War II.[9] His second novel, The Extraordinary (2021), follows an autistic teenager whose wounded father returns from military service with PTSD.[10][11][12]

In 2024, Schaeffer released Life in the Pits, a memoir recounting his experience on the trading floors of the 1980s and 1990s.[13][11]

Personal life

Schaeffer lives in Westfield, New Jersey. In 2024, he ran for a seat on the Westfield Board of Education.[14][15] He also is an accomplished guitarist and pianist and has performed with several local bands in New Jersey.
