Tyler Franz, better known by his stage name Breakneck the Mage (often referred to as Breakneck), is an American hip hop recording artist, former DJ, and show promoter from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, who is currently based in Minneapolis, Minnesota[1]. He has collaborated and shared stages with Copywrite, Ecid, Eyedea and Kristoff Krane, among others. Breakneck is currently signed to Sonic Swings Records.[2] He has also worked as a journalist for various music and professional wrestling based organizations.[3] In 2006 he launched Sonic Swings Records, a Minneapolis-based record label.

Musical career

Breakneck the Mage first gained attention in the Twin Cities hip hop Chippewa Valley hip hop scene with his 2007 album Breakneck the Mage Goes to Hollywood.[4] During the following years he would open for large regional acts such as Eyedea & Abilities, Tech N9ne, Heiruspecs, Mac Lethal, and collaborate with St. Paul rapper Kristoff Krane. In 2009, he released Breakneck the Mage is Dead.[5]

In 2011, Breakneck released two albums The Misadventures of... and Overdubs & Overdoses.[6] It was shortly after these releases when he relocated to Minnesota and quickly became a known name in the Twin Cities hip hop scene. The following years would also see the first extensive touring and show schedule of his career. He appeared alongside artists such as Grieves, Astronautalis, and Dem Atlas during this period. It was also during this time that he started competing in acapella battle rap competitions, eventually participating in battles all across the Midwest as well as Colorado and Massachusetts. To this date he has competed in over 30 battles, including a highly-viewed 2015 matchup with Atlanta rapper Carter Deems (Wild N Out). In addition, he founded the North division of No Coast Raps[7] in 2015, an organization that would host some of the biggest shows in battle rap in the subsequent years.

In 2016, he released Protecting Metropolis. The genre-bending album featured production from Caesar (Out of Bounds) and the track "Slack Jaw" featuring ECID found a moderate level of success independently. This same year, he picked up his first television credits, as a stage producer. He also appeared on an episode of MTV's Brothers Green Eats filmed in Chicago.[8]

In 2020, he released the album Balance.
