History[edit]

Founders Wayne Smith and Lee Grabham met at a mutual friend's stag do and soon began home-brewing together after sharing an interest in craft beer. Brew York initially started in Wayne's shed in 2013 and in 2016 a brewery with on-site tap room was built in York City Centre.

In 2020, in order to meet with growing demand both domestically and internationally, Brew York expanded their portfolio with the acquisition of a 13,000 sq ft unit in Osbaldwick, York. This move meant the brewery could immediately increase production capacity from 880,000 pints a year to nearly 4 million pints a year with the scope to comfortably double the output should demand increase further.[1][2]

In 2020, Brew York further expanded their range and opened The Market Tap in Pocklington and Brew York: New Briggate in Leeds[3]

The expansion was funded through the reinvestment of profits, loans and grant-funding which included £200,000 from Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP).[4]

In the Media[edit]

Brew York created a beer called Dame Judy Quench which was a DDH Pale Ale named after York native, Dame Judy Dench. In November of 2019 a photo of Dame Judy Dench holding a can of Dame Judy Quench was circulated around social media along with the feedback that she enjoyed it.[5]

On the 13th of December in 2019, Dame Judy Dench appeared on the BBC One program The Graham Norton Show along side co-star Jennifer Hudson to promote their latest project, the film adaptation of Cats. During the interview, Graham Norton, Judy as well as additional guests Hugh Grant and Matthew McConaughey all sampled glasses of Dame Judy Quench on air and gave a brief review. [6][7][8][9] This appearance on The Graham Norton Show then inspired Brew York to brew a beer called Matthew McConaughaze as a tribute.
